I dithered for days over buying this game because of the plethora of bad reviews, especialy in the trade press; finally it sunk in that there were also a lot of good reviews out there...mostly by flight sim fans (like me!) So i bought it, i've never reveiwed a game before, but this game is so good, just so much fun; that i had to, BUY IT! Slow it isn't, all flight games seem slow at altitude; try a carrier landing, buzzing the deck or flying head to head with another jet: it ain't slow! Repetitve? Well there are only certain elements to air combat aren't there? Doom is repetitive..even so it's fun but this is sheer hi octane joy...if you are, like me; a mug for PC sims you will love this game; it does everything you ever wanted without the bugs, crashes, slowdowns and fiddly controls. You must set all the options on top difficulty, highest realism; be patient for the first four missions or so which are easy and short as the program holds hands with you for a while but then the difficulty curve begins to tip up for the stratosphere and you start to enjoy...me i'm of to play some more.
frustrating to start with.......
First flight sim i've played on a console and was very dissappointed and frustrated to start with:
problems - limited manouverabilty (could only bank to 90 degrees)
-nigh on impossible to dodge missiles.
-first few mission were so easy it was like shooting fish in a barrel then you become unstuck, cos you cant point the plane in the direction you want quickly enough
-the background music.... give me strength
BUT - have altered the settings e.g from arcade to realistc, weapons select to manual, customised my payload improved missle dodging skills and now the game has potential.
-you can also select your own music thanks to the wonder of the 360.
-storyliine remains poor but, hey, am just there to shoot things and i mostly ignore the AI babble
not tried the game online yet so cannot comment
if you are patient and persistent, over G is not a bad buy. Good, but not great.
Hi Ex Up The Exhaust Pipe
You'll want to love the pretty aircarft models, and you'll want to love nursing a smoking F16 back to the tarmac after a sortie, but mostly you'll just despair. The only way to consistently evade incoming air to air missiles is to fly head on at them, corkscrewing, and pray you only get crippled (forcing a tedious and very slow return to base) rather than blown to bits. Survival is about luck (and very bad odds) rather than skill, meaning however pretty it is, as soon as you come up against an aircraft any more challenging then a Chinese junkpile (there's a worldwide selection of junk & quality opposing machinery) there's a fair chance your ass is doomed. There's very little skill involved, and as soon as you hear the missile launch warning, you'll just want to chuck something (probably the controller) at the wall.
Aside from the missions (cue awful storyline and briefings that would be at home on a Megadrive) there's the apparently huge map that you can roam at will... Oh, hang on - you mean a couple of tiny little islands and a whole lot of empty ocean. And back on the subject of the missions - how short?! Fly around, shoot down three brainless computer pilots in wholly inappropriate and ancient machines, and that's it... Followed by another mission where three ridiculously competent pilots pop up behind you (they don't fly in - they pop up, meaning it always feels very unconvincing) - and launch wave after wave of missiles that can only be evaded as detailed above.
Yes, you'll want to love it, but it's too damn frustrating and pointless. Don't be seduced by pretty pictures - the gameplay is horrible.
