Customer Reviews
And Britpop lives on.
The last few years, there's been somewhat of a Britpop revival. Oasis and Jarvis Cocker released new albums in 2005 and 2006 respectively, the Kaiser Chiefs fly the flag of Britpop and, mid-last year, Duels emerged with this album; they even appear signed to a Britpop label, Nude, the home of Suede.
Duels clearly take influence from tons of the Britpop bands, as well as some post-punk, to the extent that they even toured with Graham Coxon at one point. As such, to a minor extent, this album doesn't really have anything fresh on it. However, that doesn't matter when an album is such a fabulously written and produced pop gem as this.
This punchy, sharp pop record is balanced perfectly between fast ones and slow ones, acoustic and electric, synthetic and organic. You have the motormouthed singles like 'Pressure On You' and 'Animal,' two underrated tunes, and you have the downbeat ebb and flow of 'The Monsters Are Loose' or 'The Slow Build.' There's also some nice lyrical flourishes, the anti-materialism of 'Things' or the grand standing of opener 'Brothers and Sisters.'
In another fantastic pop move, Duels save their very best song for last place. 'Taxi Song' closes the album, all synth washes and post-narcotic hazes; it's the perfect comedown from a classic pop album. This LP may not re-invent the wheel, but it doesn't need to, because it's simply pop music at its best.
Excellent debut album from a highly under-rated band.
Duels are one of those bands who should get more credit than they do, lesser bands appear to pop up out of nowhere and make it in the music business.
I read a review in NME which slated their at the time new single 'Animal' which I thought was excellent compared to some of the rubbish which was being raved about.
This album can be described as modern brit-pop, the infuences are probably quite apparent.
This album is well worth a listen.
Glorious debut from leeds band
After hearing successive singles from the band over the preceding months,i was looking forward to the album and wasn't disappointed.I get reminded of Pulp in places ,whether its the song titles or music styles i'm not sure, but i feel they are a real treasure of a band who are deserving of reat things in 2006 and beyond.Reccommended!
