Synopsis
Comedy drama series from the award-winning writer Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly). Newlyweds Ian and Lisa move away from London to the village where Lisa grew up and which is dominated by her turkey-farming father. Lisa's parents disapprove of Ian's independent spirit while he finds their lifestyle and philosophy distinctly alien. A new job as the village photographer is supposed to integrate Ian into rural life but Ian's photographic skills are rudimentary to say the least...

Lovely and frequently hilarious
I loved this series when it was TV and am delighted that the BBC has finally responded to viewer feedback and made it available on DVD. The cast is excellent, the writing nicely-paced with a mixture of comic styles, and the basic setup (Dylan Moran trapped in the countryside which he hates) is an enjoyable comic scenario. Some people will dislike the strong "drama" element and the tension between Moran and Coleman's characters, but I like the slower pace - and by the way, I love Black Books, the Mighty Boosh and other frenetic shows. There are some fantastic set-pieces: when Moran plays goalie in a village football match that is basically licensed thuggery; when he goes on a ride in the local fire engine; when Charlotte Coleman visits Emma Chambers (playing an early version of her ditzy character in The Vicar of Dibley) clothes shop; and some lovely scenes of mutual incomprehension between Frank Finlay and Moran.
Just stumbled accross it, and love it!
I came across this series on Amazon one day when I was bored looking at other things that Dylan Moran was in. After a new found love for his stand ups and Black Books, I thought I would give this a go since the price here is so reasonable for a two series set.
I am happy to say that I have loved every bit of it. While Black Books and his stand up's are laugh out loud, this doesn't tend to be. But funny in a way that makes you keep watching it.
There are quite a few people in this which you now see in bigger parts or newer things. A couple of examples are Peter Serofinawitz (not sure of spelling) and the bloke who played the loud common geezer type role in Hustle, and I think has a big part in a new comedy.
To round up, I suggest you get it if every a fan of Dylan or any comedy for that matter. A great entertainment.
Warm wry and subtle, not side-splitting
This isn't the sit-com you'd expect it to be when you see Dylan Moran, Mark Heap and Peter Serafinowicz in the cast- don't expect anything like "Black Books" or "Spaced".
This is a very subtle character comedy set in a rural English village. It's very warm and believable but it isn't surreal or laugh-out-loud humour. In that way it reminded me of the 80s "Beiderbeck Affair" series.
Dylan Moran is excellent, with flashes of his "Black Books" character beginning to emerge but with a sincere acting talent.
Warm and touching but don't expect your sides to split.
