Synopsis
Comedy drama series from the award-winning writer Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly). Newlyweds Ian and Lisa move away from London to the village where Lisa grew up and which is dominated by her turkey-farming father. Lisa's parents disapprove of Ian's independent spirit while he finds their lifestyle and philosophy distinctly alien. A new job as the village photographer is supposed to integrate Ian into rural life but Ian's photographic skills are rudimentary to say the least...

Subtle yet hilarious and ignored for too long
Simon Nye, for all his fame, has never written anything quite as crisp, understated and character driven as this woefully little seen masterpiece. Though it is brooding, sarcastic yet basicly panic stricken Dylan Moran that dominates (with a persona he took to the surreal extreme in Black Books), his performance is centred by the beguiling normality of Charlotte Coleman. Also brilliant are Peter 'Darth Maul / Look Around You' Serafinowicz as Charlotte's sadistic brother, and Frank Finlay as her venomous father.
stick with it
I bought this for the cast line up but must admit that after the first episode I wasn't thrilled. However, I stuck with it, mainly because I associate Emma Chambers, Charlotte Coleman and Dylan Moran with innovative, quirky comedy and was sure there was more to it than first meets the eye; I was right! I have now reached the end of the second dvd (series 2) and am feeling a little woeful that there can never be a third because Charlotte Coleman is no longer with us; I would love to find out how things go from here. The episode with the horse riding lesson (Derek and Helen)is one I will revisit time and again whenever I need a chuckle!!
Brilliant! As good as I remembered.
I clicked "buy now" with a bit of apprehension. I remembered it being ace but could it live up to the heights my memory had placed it at. YES! Totally! The drama-comedy balance is probably weighted more to the comedy side which works perfectly. The characters are all perfectly cast. It's also great spotting all the actors we know from many other series now, from Vicar of Dibley to Spaced. I can't believe the writer of 'Men behaving Badly' wrote this as the series couldn't be more of a contrast. It's a huge shame (after Charlotte Colemans sad death, only 33) that there can never be a third series to consolidate the cliff hanger of series two. At least it ends on a high with both series being quality rather than declining gradually as so many great series do when they outstay their welcome. I feel Dylan Moran plays a better role than his Black books character (which is also brill), his laid back dry humour slots neatly into 'How do you want me?'.
