Californian goth-punk quartet follow up 2003's 'Sing The Sorrow' with this, their seventh album. AFI have always striven to do something different with every new release and this time they have delivered their boldest statement to date. Working once again with producer Jerry Finn, here they expand on the grandiose, dramatic flair that surfaced on 'Sing The Sorrow' and experiment with more synths and programming (provided by Ronan Harris of UK electropop duo VNV Nation). Includes the single 'Miss Murder'.

Punch, punky, varied and exciting throughout
This album is a great follow-on from Sing the Sorrow, I would say it is more varied and it's packed with instant classics (e.g. Miss Murder).
I loved the album from start to finish. The last track (Head Like a Hole) really reminds me of a track by Nine Inch Nails, although I can't remember the name.
approach with an open mind
ok then so here AFI have pulled the turn around of their career.
personally i dont like sing the sorrow and thought all was lost but here they have convinced me that there is hope for them yet!!!
the songs are tighter and the production is immaculate.
what they have done is create the nastiest pop/punk album EVER!
yes it is very shiny in comparison to the early work but the anger has returned and the fierce bite that made them so electrifing to listen to is back.
daveys lyrics and vocal delivery is spot on.
the bounce is back and the bang is back.
what they have done is near perfectly marry the melodies to the explosive noise. the best example is "kiss and control" where tey manage to cram every element of their career into this one song from the goth to the punk to the indie to the hardcore sreaming...it truely is majestic.
if you are new to the band you could start in a worse place and if you are an older fan then give it a few spins as i wasnt convinced at first but it creeps into your head and makes you go back and listen to it again.
Decemberunderground!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a good album from AFI and whilst it has many great goth/emo tracks it is simply not as good as the bands last offering "Sing the sorrow." AFI have a distinctive sound and are an emo band that mix melodic vocals with heavy instruments as well as a combination of goth and punk. Highlights include the fast paced single "Miss murder" as well as "Kiss and control" and my favourite track "The killing lights." Overall i think that this is a good album that continues AFIs distinctive sound. However, this album is simply not as good as the last album which is the bands best work so far. In short, i would say that this album is a must buy for an AFI fan or someone who already owns and likes "Sing the sorrow." However, if you are new to the band i would suggest that you start with the band's last release as it is a better introduction to AFI.
