Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Any band formed by a former toyshop owner who cites his influences as REO Speedwagon, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne and Tammy Wynette, aren't going to be the most deep and meaningful bunch, but they have their moments. Like most people, Bowling For Soup have issues, they just don't mope about them, preferring instead to vent their frustrations through cathartic bouts of rocket fuelled surf punk on Let's Do It For Johnny. All the things that preoccupy the hearts and minds of skateboard kids around the world are succinctly dealt with using the minimum of tact and the maximum of hard rocking sincerity. In short, sharp, three-minute bursts to chugging beats and undeniably contagious tunes, they tackle always being a hot girl's best friend, never her lover ("Suckerpunch"), the mysteries of relationships ("Bitch"), fatal attractions ("Dance With You") and the need for a new girlfriend ("Valentino"). They're Blink 182 with a heart, and whatever their problems, Bowling For Soup, like the slacker generation they represent, are determined not to let the world or less than understanding girlfriends get them down. Amen to that. --Dan Gennoe

CD Description
These Texas power pop punks may describe their music as "Steve Martin meets Cheap Trick on Speed", and they may have adapted stage names like Erik Rodham Clinton and Gary Wiseass (bass and drums, respectively). Still, despite the occasional in-your-face anomaly, like the very funny "Bitch", they'reactually no more of a goof than, say, Green Day. The songwriting here is sharp, and, surprisingly, their cover of BryanAdams' "Summer of '69" is done straight--apparently they simply liked the song. Or perhaps they just appreciate the irony in singing a nostalgic song written by a man who didn't fully experience the period he was writing about. Adams, after all, was only 10 in the summer of '69, wheareas these guysweren't even born yet, in which case their version is in a weird way actually more honest. Feel free to sort this out at your leisure.

Doing it for Johnny in style5
When I first heard this album I wasn't sure that the bouncing melodic tunes were my kind of music. However, Bowling For Soup really grow on you and the superb lyrics of songs like Bitch, Valentino and You and Me really stick in your head. All of the songs have an addictive beat with lyrics that most people can easily relate to. Bowling For Soup show similarities to bands such as Greenday or in places Blink 182. All of the songs bar one (that being Bryan Adams Summer of '69) are their own and come with a fresh and new feeling. This is a very much upbeat album with lyrics that will make even the hardest person smile. I highly recommend this album and it is well worthy of the five stars I give it.

This album is excellent...catchy pop-punk rythms with a hint of country and emo...you really can't get much better than that!
