Oh come on, lighten up folks!4
If you want to accuse me of buying this game only because it contains scantily clad, ridiculously stylised women frolicking, of being lured in by the chance to collect bikinis for said women, take photos of them, watch them cavorting... then you'd be absolutely 100% correct.

To break it down for you, sports games really aren't my bag. In fact generally, I would call them dull. Normally I gravitate toward first and third person action titles and survival horror. I am currently making my may through F.E.A.R. and to be frank the bleakness, the onminous, brooding environments gave me the urge for a little change of pace. Something all-together more cuddly! And there you have it - D.O.A. Xtreme 2.

Criticism of this game has been frankly massive. 50% because of its titillating nature, 50% because of gameplay flaws and the fact that is regarded to be in many ways inferior to its predecessor.

Personally I haven't played the first D.O.A. Xtreme game so I can't judge how the volleyball sections have suffered with this sequel but as voyeuristic, girlie, sports non-games go I simply can't see whats so bad about this.

Admittedly the camera angle is a little difficult on the volleyball levels and the casino games can seem just a tiny bit stacked against you, but that really is the worst of it. The jet-ski levels are fun with a reasonable learning curve and the ability to chuck stunts in here and there give the whole thing a little more longevity than its being credited with. The camera mode too comes across like part of the game in itself as the controls are deliberately difficult in order to prevent you from, say, zooming in directly on the booty!! The minigames like pool-hopping and the guiltily pleasing `butt battles' are pleasantly diverting and neither suffer from the mammoth loading times or frustration levels that some reviewers seem to be accusing them of.

In short, is this game a work of genius that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Gears of War, Dead Rising and Resident Evil 4? No of course it isn't.

It does however do exactly what it says on the tin: Fun, aimless, fantasy in a beautiful playground. If you don't like it, don't buy it. But please don't try and preach morals.

Flawed gameplay3
I'm an old DOA fan, back from it's initial release on the Playstation, always been a fan of the games as you never needed to be a total geek and learn every single button combo off by heart. That sadly changed with DOA4 and continues with this nice but sadly flawed game.

On the plus side :
Nice graphics
Alternate rides and competitions add a bit more flavour
More swimsuits

On the negative side :

Longer loading times
Unforgiving gameplay in volleyball
Price inflation/selection for costumes
Poor control over poolside/beach viewing
Absolutely appalling "camera" control

I'm extremely dissapointed with Team Ninja for making the game DOA4'esque in it's unforgiving, tightly timed gameplay. The games used to be fun to pick up and play for a bit of fun and relaxation - not any more. The button timing and player positioning has been tightened and anything less than perfection is harshly punished. Lose a partner with some characters and you may as well forget getting another as well.

If you persevere enough (ie spend way too long learning the controls and perfecting your game) then you can buy some overly priced swimsuits. You'll not be allowed to see them much though due to the terrible handling of the character viewing mode. The poolside viewing is more restricted than XBV1 - no zoom and the panning is terrible and the "take a break" options with the "camera" are painfull. The camera is fiddly, difficult to use and lacks sensible positioning controls.

All in all a bit of a let-down. This game could have been so much better with just a little thought :

Put in a pause option while in viewing mode
Put in a game difficulty slider for us less gifted players who have a job to go to
Allow costumes earned in XBV1 to be available (or cheaper) in this game.

A time wasting trap!2
Depending on your view of this sort of 'entertainment', You will have already have made your mind up about it. You will either avoid it like the plague, or be curious.

I picked up the first one for £10 out of curiousity a few years back and was quite surprised by how fun and addictive it was, and its laid-back gameplay was quite refreshing in this age of power ups, monsters and gunfights.
Naturally, I was quite looking forward to the next-gen sequel.
Unfortunately, like DOA4, Team Ninja just re-hashed the older game and made it harder, more time consuming and cruelly unfair in places. Its not a very rewarding game at all.
The amount of work needed to earn money, expand your collection and give swimsuits(and have them accepted) to other girls is insane, and very repetitive. The achievements are extremely long-winded. Ive played it for 12 hours so far and I'm no where near unlocking the easiest achievement! I just cant be bothered devoting my time to such a simplistic game. The effort just isnt worth the rewards.

Other annoying things:

Load times are much longer than DOAX1
Frame rate is actually LESS fluid than DOAX1
The 'breast physics' are ridiculously over the top
Minigames are mostly down to luck than skill, and not very enjoyable
Volleyball is harder, with a modified passing system and much tighter response times, which can make it very frustrating when dealing with fast spikes. The camera also makes it hard to see where the ball will land.
Earning money is very difficult and long-winded, unless youre an ace at poker or have the patience of a saint.

Given the fact that fans of DOAX1 already wasted so much of their time completing their collection, you would have thought that the sequel would have been different, or at least made more forgiving, rather than having to devote tens or even 100s of hours to get the game anywhere near complete all over again.

[...], maybe, but the fact this cost me the same as the amazing Gears of war or Rainbow 6 Vegas makes me ill!
