Product Description

Debut album from Phil Spector-obsessed all-girl indie-pop trio who, like the Concretes and the Raveonettes, combine thesugary, harmony-laden sounds of 60s girl groups with the raw, lo-fi influence of 80s and 90s indie. The result is a short, sharp set of catchy, summery pop which has received acclaim from critics and fans alike. Contains the singles 'DirtyMind', 'Pull Shapes' and 'Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me'.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Quick! Somebody give Smash Hits CPR! Were the legendary pop-mag relic still going The Pipettes would surely be the subject of the double-page pull-out souvenir lyric poster special every other issue, a fresh pose a fortnight. And had Top Of The Pops not been sabotaged and sent spinning towards the precipice leaking brake fluid, the candy-floss Brighton trio with a mean kick could easily have been the house band--all the polka dots you could dream of, week in, week out. The Pipettes understand what it is you love about pop music, see. "Dance with me, it will be alright". And the fact that falling in and out of love probably has a little something to do with it. "It's not love… but it's still a feeling".

After a promising run of singles comes an album dense with sparkle, packed only with potential number ones in any reality that makes sense. It's a glorious scissors 'n' magazine cut 'n' paste collage fantasy of karaoke in Camden bars, '60s girl-groups haircuts, giddy harmonies, string licks like diamond encrusted accessories and passport pictures of past conquests. "Judy" is a witty bittersweet tale of teen identity, like Kenicke with their bootstraps pulled tight by the Shangri-Las, "Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me" is the Go Team trimmed by Phil Spector, and "One Night Stand" is an inverse "I Will Survive", brandishing an unbranded packet of old-fashioned girl power, the other party the victim. Any signs of life from Smash Hits yet? No? Shame, this should have wiped the floor at the Poll Winners' Party. --James Berry

I am just sorry I did not discover this album 2 years ago when it came out. It is absolutely brilliant. The Pipettes are great singers, dancers and songwriters and watching them in interviews they are so down to earth as well. They capture the 'retro girl band' feel perfectly but have an equally modern hint to their music as well, which to me is what stands out.
The albums starts with the wonderfully catchy intro 'We are the Pipettes' then moves into the brilliant single that got me into the Pipettes 'Pull Shapes'. I love the mix of 'catchy' and 'softer' songs. I find the catchier tracks fun to listen to like 'Dirty Mind', 'One Night Stand' and 'Sex'. But what really stood out to me is the more emotional songs like 'I Love You' and 'Tell me what you want'. They pull off both types of song with perfection. Can't wait for the next album.

The Pipettes - Outstanding 4

I'll keep this short and simple. The Pipettes are unquestionably one of the most talented, refreshing, entertaining young bands in Europe today.

They blew me away when I saw them live. Hell, I didn't even want to go along to the gig. A tight backing band (who get little acclaim), hugely addictive hooks, nifty wee dance routines and down-to-earth lyrics with loads of humour.

At one point, I got all apprehensive `cos I couldn't decide which one I fancied the most. I watched two interviews with them on You Tube and it was cool to see they had a laconic sense of wit and never came across as 'up' themselves.

I just hope their management work hard to get them maximum exposure over the forthcoming year. They've toured constantly for over a year and deserve success.

Don't fanny around if you get the chance of a ticket to see them live.

Quite, quite something.

People always mention Bananarama when they talk about the Pipettes,so I will. WATP is what the nana's would've sounded like if they'd signed to Rough Trade instead of the financially rewarding but artistically stifling S.A.W. and someone had made them realise that music is supposed to be fun(ny). The Pipettes are closer to the criminally under-rated 80's group Makin'Time than anyone else,i.e. sussed, sharp words, welded to raging tunes which leg it past at 100mph. This is a wild, wanton ride through love, loss, losing love etc.while throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the musical mix.Distant voices caw and shriek, things bang and clang in the background, loads to keep the dizzy listener intrigued til the whole heady,hook-laden joy-ride, shudders to a halt after barely half an hour. Pefect. No need to drone on with extra tracks and b-sides(yawn). Like those ace Jam lps, just say your piece and leave. They've got an orchestra in there! How it keep up is anyones guess-but it does.Interesting, articulate words tumble from interesting, meticulate arrangements.I was going to argue that WATP is is the real voice of mid-naughties rock feminism(it certainly knocks Girl-Power into a cocked hat!),but I'm not sure such a notion exists. Evil, sexist capitalists have seen to that. The only worry I've got is how they're gonna follow this.We have to hope they dont get mature on us,start sensitive posing on the covers, and singing...(gulp!)SLOW SONGS!! But for now the Pipettes appear invincible in a singing-raucous-songs-in-short-polka-dot-dresses sense. But I sense, they wont be doing this forever.Blink and you'll miss 'em.
