More of the same, plenty of room for improvement
I have played and got every international cricket captain game, 1, 2, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005 and this one and i love them all but yes i agree with the other reviews, the manufaturers need to put more into it. Cricket is my main sport but i do like football manager games and even champ man of 4 or 5 years ago has more features. Here's a list of things for the next game to have to make it a real contender as best sports management game.
- more youth players coming up at the contracts page
- u-17, u-19 and u-21 competitions as well...bascially MORE YOUTH WORK!!! they are the future of your team
- the ability to look out for specific players you want and catch them at an early age (e.g you want an allround legspinner who is adept in both areas, have the option to scout very young players and put them into youth development schemes)
- the option to build structures that will benefit your team (what would football manager games be like without the option to build training centres, update them, merchandise shops and of course YOUTH TRAINING facilities)
- better fielding options
- the ability to change players roles (e.g jamie dalrymple is a batsman in the games, but everyone knows him as an allrounder!) and for allrounders put training for their batting and bowling not just one area
I have no complaints about the graphics because you are just watching highlights, not playing the whole thing so graphics are fine.
Those of you saying the computer cheats...well you must be really poor at the game because ive won loads of competitions, even without the best team, you've got to learn how to play properly and selecting the right players in the right positions is a big factor.
Apart from that, it is more of the same really, so i understand why some people are getting frustrated with the only recent updates being player profiles and specific cups. It Really can be a fantastic management game if it wanted to be...
A disappointment
I am an avid cricket fan but this game just leeches all the fun out of the glorious game. The whole point of management games is to feel in touch with your players, to make you feel like you are making a difference to their perfomance. This game fails to deliver this. After about 5 minutes i switched off the highlight mode because it was driving me insane. After that I spent a few hours relentlessly clicking on the next over button watching my batsman fail despite my best endeavours to make sure they played themselves in and my bowlers likewise fail to make any inroads into a group of very average county batsman. All in all if you like games which display a rolling number count with little depth and a feeling of complete and utter helplessness then this is the one for you.
Cricket simulation bugged with problems
I had played an older version of this game about three years ago, which was medicore but decent, so I decided to try it out again. To my utter surprize the graphic engine hasn't changed much even though other games have moved light years beyond. Even that is not perfect, e.g. runouts only happen at the batsmans side and those too are effected only by direct hits!!! not once will keeper interfer to help a runout. There are other things wrong with the whole system, e.g. the batsmans will often play a cover drive off a bouncer.
Now coming to some other basic flaws, the fielding settings suck. If you want to manually change them every time you change a bowler then good luck otherwise we have other better things to do in life. The computer generated fieldings are laughable. Even in a defensive setting in a one day match during the death overs, the computer leave two slips and most of the times even a silly leg!!!
Most of the times you don't feel in control of your batsmans and bowlers. This game probably requires micro management and not all of us want to go in those details. Even if you tweak everything, your batsmans will get out and your bowlers will get a regular beating if the computer wants to. Sometimes it just feels that the computer cheats whenever it feels like.
Lastly there is no way to jump in a cricket world cup or 20-20 match right of the start. You have to play a whole season and wait for these events to happen to play them. Moreover when I reached the cricket world cup, McGrath and Warne were missing from my selection list, I don't know why. Same happened when I played with Pakistan where Inzmam was missing from the list of selectable cricketers.
THe only thing good about the game is that it doesn't have long wait screens (which is due to its age old graphic engine) and its easy to quickly skip balls and overs. Select the highlights level you want. You can skip whole matches as well. Overall if you are a cricket FAN and have an old computer, and having nothing else to do then go get the game you might have some enjoybale time. For the rest of the world, stay off unless the game is drastically improved in the next version.
