Customer Reviews
The Makeover is Hot!
You can never keep an artist like Jody Watley down. She's proved time and time again that she'll find a way to get her music to the people. "The Makeover" - released on Jody's Avitone Recordings label - is her 9th studio album, and the chanteuse had never looked or sounded better.
The album concept was simple:
Pick a handful of influential songs from the 70's, 80's, 90's an 00's, and re-work them with fresh, vibrant grooves; then add a couple of new songs, and you have an eclectic blend of retro soul with today's hottest R&B/house/urban grooves.
The album kicks off with one of the early Watley classics - "Don't You Want Me" (remixed by King Britt). Fans who remembered the original when it was released will love this cool re-working.
Bob Marley's "Waiting In Vain" gets the Ron Trent treatment, and Jody really mashes this song up! Its appeal was immediate (just like Ron's remix of "Saturday Night Experience" from the previous "Midnight Lounge" album.) The up tempo rhythm is tight, and Jody's made the song her own.
"A Beautiful Life" was inspired by the grooves of The Brand New Heavies. It's a great song about survival and staying strong.
"A Bed of Roses" (with 4 Hero) is superb, percussive cut, complete with interesting lyrics. It's one of the strongest tracks on the album, and one of the finest songs that Jody's written to date.
Two of disco's classic tracks - Chic's "I Want Your Love" and Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" get the Watley make over, the latter track taking on a more laid back groove than the original.
Jody's version of Madonna's "Borderline" is stunning. Sung as a ballad, the lyrics seem more intense and melancholic. Jody's nuanced vocal performance is poignant and moving.
The Carpenters medley is sung over a hypnotic, simple up tempo R&B groove.
The Mark de Clive-Lowe remix of "Midnight Lounge" is bright and snazzy. It took the original groove (which was cool to begin with) to a whole new level. A future single, perhaps?
"The Makeover" has re-affirmed Jody's position as a trend-setter who's never been afraid to follow her own musical path. The result of Jody's makeover: HOT!!
