A Manifesto4
At the time of its release, David Gilmour's first solo album was quite low profile, sandwiched between the musical behemoths of Animals and The Wall. Even the cover art is unprepossessing, being an undynamic outdoor shot of a gloomy winters day with the band members louching at seeming random. This is a shame because this work is a real gem, showcasing the full range of Gilmours musical range from delicate acoustic work to full on metal solo's. 'Deafinitely' thunders along and used to be a favourite track for listening on 'cans' with its heavily flanged guitar which spirals up to infinity at the end. 'Mihalis' is a work of powerful simplicity with beautifully modulated playing throughout.
For anyone who has come to Gilmour through his recent work, this is an essential addition to the collection being much more representative of the Gilmour muse than the 'coke and gloss' of his second solo work.
Why only 4 stars?.....well I freely admit that this is one for Gilmour appreciators only and probably would not appeal to anyone who felt indifferent about him.

Floyd's true genius5
Fellow band member Richard Wright released his debut solo album 'Wet Dreams', on the same day as Gilmour, and it's a toss-up which is the better release. Personally I think it's Gilmour by a nose. Gilmour's guitar playing is sublime. He has an instantly recognisable style. He proves you don't have to be flash to be brilliant. Highlights include 'Mihalis' and 'No Way'. His 2nd solo release 'About Face', was very much of it's time, the'80's, and did'nt match up to this release. However the 2006 release of 'On An Island', is Gilmour back on top form and is the perfect partner to 'David Gilmour'.

A refreshing break from the generally dire UK music scene of 19784
An unpretentious yet interesting and accomplished solo debut from Pink Floyd's axeman, with two old buddies from his high school days (Rick Wills and Willie Wilson on bass and drums respectively, the latter having featured on a number of SB&Q albums). On this album, there are plenty of good electric guitar riffs and licks that are pure Gilmour and nothing to do with Pink Floyd, not to mention the whole non-Floyd feel of Messrs Wills and Wilson's amply competent rhythm section. Sure, it's David Gilmour's voice and electric guitar, but the point is that this isn't just a Pink Floyd spin-off album ~ it's better than that.

Whilst it gets a bit rowdy on the closing track, overall this is very good indeed and a pleasure to have now on CD, digitally remastered c/o the great Doug Sax, no less. And the DR reissue has all the original artwork with a very nice picture of Mr G thrown in as well.

I didn't like the next one, About Face, nearly as much, mainly because of it featuring a lot of American musicians whose influence rather undermined what, to my mind, should have been a quintessentially British flavour to the whole proceedings, though On An Island, once finally completed and issued 19 years later is, to my ears, a more worthy follow up.

Start with this album and you're unlikely to be disappointed as, for my money, it was all downhill for Pink Floyd after Wish You Were Here (and I was never bowled over by that, truth to tell).
