The Belfast Cowboy rides again.....
If you ever wanted to convert someone to the music of Ivan Morrison then this DVD should do it. This is a no frills DVD showing two live sets at the Montreux Jazz Festival in '74 & 80. Whilst under the heading of "Jazz" Van chooses to sing some of the more obscure tracks in his extensive repertoire. Don't let this put you off, its these rare tracks that make this a jem! Officially Van's only DVD release to date (although appearing in the Band's Last waltz, and Pink Floyd/R.Waters Berlin WALL DVD).
Don't let the word "jazz" put you off either, as these tracks are as "soulful" as you will ever hear. His ability to switch to a "high" voice on tracks such as "Ballerina" "Twilight Zone" and "Tupelo Honey" is truly amazing, pointing to his days in "Them".
This is Van at his moody best, hardly acknowledging the crowd, or his band come to that. He occaisionally glares out at the audience with not a flicker of emotion, who are these mere mortals that he has to associate with? But then, this is a man who writes his own music in all genres, sings his own songs, plays the guitar, saxaphone, keyboards and drums all at the same high standard. A man who pre-dates "rock & roll" starting out in a skiffle band in 60's Belfast, and has been one of the most prolific song writers in the last 50 years. A CD of his music used in movie soundtracks will be released soon. His influence in film is also a great feat!
Of course this DVD has the classic "Summertime in England" - Van's tribute to english poets such as Keats and Coleridge, worth the asking price alone. A Vantastic DVD with great sound quality. Lets hope his next DVD is not in another 50 years!
VAN MORRISON LIVE..UNMISSABLE.
I've been a Van fan since the days of THEM,in fact a band I was in were booked to do a support slot with them, sadly the band played but Van didn't come. None the less he is one of the very greatest artists in the history
of popular music, songs that will last for mant years, classics. So to this
DVD,because those of us have so long waited for something from him. This
is even better than expected, two great sets from a legendary music festival,
and they are so good you'll play them again and again.Full of Van's classic
songs, the second with a band that as good as it gets. (one music magazine
has said that another set from the 2006 festival is also coming ). In the
meantime buy this timeless classic of a DVD,grab a comfy chair and just soak
up the magic of Van Morrison in your own lounge,....wonderful.
One great CD one that is curious
I am a great Van Morrison fan. He is the greatest. However I like some of his output more than others. His jazzy numbers have never thrilled me.
There are two CDs here. The one from 1974 is interesting in that you see the man six years after he recorded Astral Weeks using material that has proved very ephemeral.
The CD of the 1980 concert in contrast is magnificant. It must have been released after the CD Wavelength was released (with Into The Music as some of his best albums). Almost ever song performed is a classic and the performances are great.
