Very funny5
Jimmy Carr is very much a love/hate comedian - you either love his brand of comedy or can't stand the guy. Well I'm in the corner that enjoys his style of humour. Basically he throws out a series of one-liners at a rather impressive rate. Some are genuinely clever lines where he plays on words to give them another meaning, with hilarious if often politically incorrect results. Other jokes you simply have to hold your head in your hands and shake your head in disbelief that someone could actually make the lamest one-liners imaginable sound funny. Yet he somehow does it with almost perfect comic timing.

This 2 disc set features both of his critically acclaimed stand up shows - Jimmy Carr Live and Stand Up. Both are equally funny and contain some reasonable extras. Live includes his breakthrough 10 minute Royal Variety performance, Small Ads (where he recalls genuine adverts he placed in newspapers and magazines with somewhat dubious content) and a few other extras to take up some 20+ minutes of your time on top of the 8o minute live stand up show. Stand Up feautures extras such as Comedy Idol (a comedy version of Pop Idol where Jimmy is one of the judges) and his splendid 20 minute Comedy Central performance from America - in total about 90 minutes of extras as well as the main 80 minute attraction.

All in all this collection represents good value for money and is very enjoyable as long as you are not easily offended. Recommended.

Praise be, I'm converted!5
I've always been a tad unsure about Jimmy Carr. Whilst I love 8 out of 10 Cats and the 'Top 100 of...' shows he does I've never really rated him as a stand up comedian.

However this box set shows how wrong, wrong, wrong I've been for all this time. He is VERY funny and his observation on life is spot on. I've never been a fan of comedians who take the pee out of their audience but I do feel that he does it with a certain amount of affection.

If you have a spare Saturday night in, get this set and I promise you will be hooting like an owl.

An excellent comedic mind4
Jimmy Carr has a excellent comedy mind, and his retention for one-line jokes is staggering. His subject matter ranges across the whole spectrum, but a significant majority can safely be categorised as "bad taste". The bar is set through his use of the c-word several times in the opening 5 minutes of one of his shows covered in this boxset. Despite that, it doesn't turn into a swear-fest. He probably mentions c- or f-words less than 10 times in total, so that shouldn't put anyone off.

I watch stand up comedy with an analytical mind - I'm intrigued by how someone can do that, how they can remember everything and how they guage their delivery. It's like a work of art, and with some stand-ups, I'm so busy watching what they do, how they say different words, etc, that I don't actually find their jokes very funny. Jimmy Carr is different. I simply can't help but laugh.

He is a master of the unexpected punchline. You simply can't predict what's coming next, and it generates a laugh every time, through sheer surprise if nothing else.

There have been criticisms levelled at Carr through his use of repeated jokes on these 2 different shows. That is true - he does repeat some jokes. However, the total of repeated jokes is less than 5 and it doesn't detract from the remaining hour and a half of the show in the slightest. I've personally got no problem with several jokes being re-told, especially as Carr manages to still make them fresh and told in a slightly different way, or to a different audience member, etc. It will still make you laugh, and you'll still try and remember them yourself to tell your friends the next day.

The extras on the 2 DVD discs were surprisingly good as well. There's footage of Carr's appearance on the Royal Variety show, which really highlighted his confidence in his own joke-telling skill. At the beginning of the Variety show, he doesn't get huge laughs. Slowly, after a few minutes, he has them laughing loudly at everything - it's this mastery of a crowd, judge when the time is right to tell a certain joke, and delivery of an unexpected, and occasionally provoking punchline that makes Jimmy Carr's stand up shows stand above everyone else's.

Buy this, watch this, delight in his artwork, and then try and remember the jokes!
