A Good Souvenir
The Pretenders are one of my favourite bands and this DVD is most welcome.
It's a good document of a good show, with the band in great form, a good selection of oldies and newies and Chrissie Hynde in great voice.
You don't get any fancy lights, weird camera angles, exploding things or embarassing stage patter, but you do get a tight show and plenty of music for your money. It's a very different show to the classic "Isle of View" unplugged concert, to me just about the best thing The Pretenders have done.
The drawbacks are that the bass player does a great impression of a plank of wood and the sound could be better: Hynde's guitar is just about inaudible. Adam Seymour (guitar) and Martin Chambers (drums) do a great job to compensate.
The DVD extras, such as backstage interviews, are OK and worth a look.
Great In-Concert DVD.
Never seeing The Pretenders in the live forum, this DVD made me ask why? It's a knockout performance of around 26 songs, many of which were their Hits, and the odd one, like the incredible 'Tattooed Love Boys,' (in which guitarist, Adam Seymour, makes a brilliant job of the fabulous Honeyman-Scott middle-eight solo), which for me is their showstopper. And from the previous tracks, and his attacking, biting solos, I just knew he would, a superb and under-rated guitarist.
This is an excellent 2 hour gig in which plainly Chrissie Hynde is as much a (I don't take no crap!) role-model for the girls as she is (still) a bit of all right for the guys. And as if to prove the point and that her sense of humour is also intact, the cover for the 'Loose Screw' CD on the back of this DVD case has her lying on a bed as a double-entendre.
Like my fellow reviewer notes, bassist, Andy Hobson, needs to attend to his stagecraft somewhat if he wants to stay in a rock 'n' roll band and dodge the clocking in machine. But hey, he's young, and this gig is 5 year's old now; so maybe his on-stage skills have since further developed?
The 'backstage extras' are OK in that they highlight the band as many will never see them, which is always a great aspect. But drummer, Martin Chambers, comes across as the either an eccentric rock 'n' roll casualty, (in wooly hat and scarf), or they filmed his interview in Alaska and not in hot 'n' sweaty LA like the others.
