Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
A Matter of Life and Death is Iron Maiden's fourteenth studio album, in a career that has spanned three decades. And yet, after all this time, Iron Maiden continue to improve, whilst most of their peers flounder. Simply put, A Matter of Life and Death is more than just a great Iron Maiden album; it's a great metal album. It revisits a theme that's familiar territory for the band, and rather boldly, devotes an entire album to it. A Matter of Life and Death is a concept album about war, and the closest thing to a prog album that the London-based metallers have yet created. And, at their age and at this point in their career, it's a step that just makes sense, adding a level of seriousness and dignity to a band that could have easily disappeared into Spinal Tap-style silliness. Instead, the six members of Iron Maiden sound rejuvenated, playing better than ever on tracks like "These Colours Don't Run", which starts out like an army recruiting anthem before revealing it's true nature as an anti-war song, and the nine-minute plus epics "For the Greater Good of God" and "The Legacy". Iron Maiden have enjoyed a creative rennaissance in recent years, but it's hard to imagine how they'll improve upon A Matter of Life and Death. --Ted Kord

Maiden have just blown me away5
I have been a fan for over 20 years since the days of somewhere in time and seventh son. And hand on my heart this is the best album the maiden have ever done. The instant I heard the album I was hooked. It is an instant winner and you will never tire of the tracks. They thunder along with great guts and balls. Dickinson rattles away the awesome lirics with such depth that you will not be dissapointed with any of the tracks on this corker of an album. I need say no more....buy this now, Maiden rocks again.....

An epic Iron Maiden Masterpiece5
This was the first Iron Maiden album i bought and it has influecend my music to this very day, the first time i heard which was like 2006 it blew me away and i cannot believe some Iron Maiden fans find this boring sure it probably is a bit too long but it's a masterpiece. The worst track deffinetly is Different Worlds (still an awesome track). My favourites have to be Brighter Than A Thousand Suns (what a riff), The Pilgrim, For The Greater Good Of God, Lord Of Light (which is probably my favourite on the album) & The Legacy. How can anyone not like Lord Of light it's such an awesome song. All the songs i mentioned are classic oh i almost forgot The Reincarnation Of benjamin Breeg is awesome aswell. This is an awesome start to Maiden after buying this i bought Maidens whole back catologue and they have been my favourite band ever since. Ignore the low ratings this is an Iron Maiden Masterpiece. UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!

Fairly standard-quality Maiden3
Reading the other reviews here, I feel this album is perhaps too highly-rated. It's not bad, by any means, but to be honest there just aren't enough memorable songs and it just sounds like another typical Iron Maiden album.

For example, I think about 6 out of the 10 tracks all have the same old Iron Maiden format - quiet or clean intro, followed by generic-sounding heavy song, ending with the same quiet intro. It's nothing new.

Now I know they generally stick to their tried and tested formula, and there's nothing wrong with that. Other bands have certainly done the same, with much success (e.g. AC/DC), but I just feel that in this case it is rather boring and predictable.

In my opinion, this is not one of their top albums, and those who are saying it tops Seventh Son, etc. are deluded. Dance of Death was a fantastic album, and I would recommend that to anyone over this. It had far more memorable tracks, it was more creative, more thoughtful, and just felt like more work had been put into it. It just rocked harder, and had some blinding solos - something that I felt this album was distinctly lacking in.

The only stand-out track for me on this one is The Reincarnation of Benjamin Brigg, which has a fantastic hard-rocking riff, but apart from that, this is nothing special I'm afraid.
