Superb time saver
I can't say enough good things about this product. I need to work wherever I am and the Philips recorder is sleek and easy to use. Unlike previous comments, I had no trouble hooking it up and loading my words into my word processing programme. A little bit of editing perhaps, but much, much faster than keying in from scratch. This gizmo is goig to change my life!
Impressive!
I have had this software for only a week, and have been very impressed. I bought it for planning and writing assignments for an MSc. course, and so didn't expect it to recognise many of the technical terms and references, including names. However, I have been very pleasantly surprised. I tend to mumble and have a Midlands 'twang' which I thought would cause problems - but it has coped admirably. There are some annoying moments when it doesn't reconise a command, but there are facilities to 'train' it on particular words or phrases, and as I've only had it a week I guess these will get less and less. It was very easy to get started, the initial 'training' of the software was very short.
I might agree that the instuctions on using the Philips dictation 'tracer' and downloading its files were a little scant, but I got there OK with a bit of intuitive trial and error.
I would definitely recommend this product for home or business use.
Nuance Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 (Mobile Edition)
I have tried various versions of dictation software over the past 10 years (IBM ViaVoice, Dragon Dictate etc) and found them to be wanting. So I was sceptical about investing yet again in a type of software application that had previously disappointed. However, the other reviews prompted me to give it another go and I was particularly attracted by the prospect of being able to use a digital recorder.
Installation and set up proved quite straightforward on a Sony laptop operating Vista. The biggest difference I found over previous versions is that Naturally Speaking finds actual words and tries to put them into the appropriate context - earlier versions made up words based on the nearest phonetic sound. So Naturally Speaking gives you actual words but this can be difficult when proof reading - the words may look right but may also be wrong.
The digital recorder that comes with the package is adequate but I found that accuracy was less than acceptable - maybe 70% - 80% even after 'training'. I therefore bought a Sony MX 20 because it's accuracy is allegedly much superior and immediately found improved accuracy - 90% or more. The recorder works best with a headset.
For me the secret to success has been acquiring a good headset and another digital recorder. This significantly increases the cost, so whilst I'm happy with the results I can only give 4 stars because of the added costs.
