Manufacturer's Description
Panzer Tactics DS is the first and only WWII turn-based strategy wargame for the Nintendo DS. The game is played on hex-based maps and offers a variety of control options. Panzer Tactics DS offers multiple single-player modes, including the historically based campaign mode that takes players through a series of increasingly challenging missions, leading to a showdown with an awesomely powerful enemy army. The top-notch AI will continue to amaze players with its skilful use of battlefield tactics and units.
All missions are based on historical battles from WWII, utilizing real-world units from the era. New units can be unlocked, while existing units earn experience through battle. The graphics engine is designed to allow for an optimal battlefield overview, conveying the maximum amount of information without overwhelming the player, while displaying the excellent unit and terrain graphics available in the game.
Panzer Tactics DS features a four-player multiplayer mode via Nintendo Wi-Fi or DS wireless mode. In multiplayer matches, game speed and other parameters can be adjusted, allowing the gameplay to continue smoothly while players wait for one another to finish a turn.

Great turn-based strategy game for a handheld system
I am the person who enjoyed the 5-Star series "Generals" games on the PC years ago. My favorite types of games are simulations and strategy, especially turn-based. I love Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1, Tactics Orge on GBA, Sim City on PC, and of course Advanced Wars! I say all of that to say this: This game was made with a gamer like me in mind.
Panzer Tactics offers deeper gameplay than Advanced Wars, but not so much that you need a reference book to enjoy and play it. I have read many reviews of this game and there are quite a few that rate it only fair to good. I however would disagree, and say that if this is the kind of games you already enjoy, it's a good game, especially considering this is on a handheld system.
Pros:
`Overall style and presentation is done very well
`Good computer AI presents a challenge thats fun to beat
`Lots of strategic depth
`Will certainly provide many dozens of hours of playtime
`Using the stylus to play works nicely
`Great variety of maps and units to play with
`Attractive map graphics
Cons:
`The DS screens are small and therefore the unit graphics suffer. A zoom feature would have been nice to get in close to the action at times. At first units can be hard to distinguish, but with play time this becomes less of a problem. Again this is a screen size issue.
`Interface takes some getting used to in order to avoid accidental moves and mistakes such as ending a units turn when you wanted to move etc. This game does not control and interface like Advance Wars. It's more complex but in a good way.
`Computer turns can take a little while to process sometimes.
`Animations aren't very useful and are better turned off.
* I have not played the game using multiplayer modes which other reviews have generally concluded does not work well.
Overall I have really enjoyed playing this game and I hope there will be more games like it to come in the future.
a must for lovers of strategy action!
I've had my old skool DS for a while now and apart from the odd social game of mario Kart and scrabble. It for several years was mainly occupied with playing the Advance wars series. I've never until recently found a game to match AW until that is reading about Panzer tactics. It took a while to track down, it doesn't seem to be in UK high street games shops so i snapped it up when I found it on Amazon.
Game play:
The basic game play is similar to AW but with advanced tweaks. The action is based in WWII as you would expect and you get to play as you progress a german, russian and american commanders in various semi authetic senarios.
If you're use to Aw the game play will be easy to pick up, the hex grid however can be fiddly at first and some of the menus took a while to master. The basic play is enjoyable and you are soom immersed in the micro movement of tanks and artillery. Unlike AW most senarios have the fog of war adding to the complexity and challenge. The challege level is steeper than AW, looking after your troops is more important it's not all earning money and throwing unlimited tanks at your enemy.
There's plenty of secondary goals to try and acheive and getting top marks on levels you are rewarded with hidden levels and weapons.
In conclusion:
This is excellent game ideal for lovers of turn-based strategy games particularly lovers of the AW series, well worth tracking down.
Overlooked gem
If like me you've lost hundreds of hours to the PC 'Panzer General' titles, you will love this.
This basically follows the same game rules as SSI series. You pick either a campaign (German, Russian, USA) or a single scenario. The campaigns are the way to go as you will build your army both in strength and experience.
So you start will military units of the period, are given both primary and secondary objectives. You then make your moves (move or attack or rearm or reinforce) over a hexed map. Your opponent then takes his turn and so on. You can reinforce as you go and gain supplies by capturing cities, airports and ports.
The graphics are capable and the controls work well. The AI is good. My only criticism is that it can be very hard.
If you're looking for an intelligent absorbing game look no further.
