It's a very straightforward science. Sheffield is the Petri dish you see, the Arctic Monkeys the original bacterial spore of this latest cell culture. It's an accepted inevitability in these kinds of conditions that there will be imminent and accelerated asexual reproduction of said cells, it's just what happens. And lo, a matter of months later nature has taken its course. Milburn are four lads from the city of steel cutlery and Jarvis Cocker with a line in post-Libertines earnestness, pounding rhythms and overflowing colloquial accounts of the life that unfolds immediately around them. Things should be sounding familiar by now.

They're by no means the only ones, but by largely following through on their threat and not mucking about too much with the template they've made themselves into a fairly resilient proposition. This isn't a Northern Uproar/Oasis mismatch, though naturally they're missing the extent of their recent forefathers' edge, especially where the Monkeys' bungled eloquence is concerned. But by also ratcheting up the discipline of the Ordinary Boys and the added tunefulness of Maximo Park, especially on "Cheshire Cat Smile" and "Storm In A Teacup", they prove their worth. Everyone likes a game of spot the difference. And it seems things have happened in Sheffield that the Arctic Monkeys haven't had the chance to cover yet. --James Berry

Distincly below average
If people don't like this band being compared to the Arctics then why does every single review contain the Arctic Monkeys (including mine). Nearly half of the songs from this album have similar background riffs to the Arctics, the fact is the Arctics beat them to it.

This album gets quite dull after the first listen, even live they're a bit of a disappointment, not being able to play a single note in tune. If your a massive fan of the whole "indie" scene then this might be a good album for you...otherwise i'd save your money

If you like indie, you will love Milburn
With the sudden rush of indie hitting the UK at the moment, a flood of indie fans seem to think they know everything about indie, except one thing, they all listen to everything that is mainstream and if its not in the charts you put a name like milburn past them and they dont have a clue who you are on about, if you really have listened to alot of indie music I'm sure you will have passed milburn, and I can say that the album does not disappoint, every song on the album is brilliant, its a great album just to sit and dance along to. The lyrics are well constructed and flow very well with the songs beat as a whole. Personal favourites from this album would have to to 'Chesire cat smile' and 'Storm in a teacup'. If you've got a gap in your music library that needs filling, this will prove to be a essential to componant to your library.

All Sheffield Indie bands rock!
Don't like to hear Milburn compared to the Arctic Monkeys. They are different. I have the Arctics, Milburn and Little Man Tate on my ipod and all have been played the same number of times. I love this album and got most upset when I dropped my first copy and scratched it. Would love to see them live; will try and catch them later this year.
