Editorial Reviews
CD Description
Maria Lawson, the X-Factor 'reject' who lost out to The Conway Sisters is set to make her second bid for fame with her debut album. Her soulful tones are put to reasonably good use; her voice is silky and the tracks are varied but on the mellow side, making it an album to chill to. Maria belongs inthe same category as female artists like Gabrielle and Whitney - not what you'd expect to hear from your atypical X-Factor contestant.

Fabulous
Maria Lawson should have stayed much longer on the X-Factor, but maybe being voted off when she was turned out to be a blessing in disguise as she's been able to put together a fabulous album. It deserves a lot more airplay than it seems to be getting so far. Sleepwalking, The Poet and Naked with you really stand out for me though every track is good, and Maria's version of You're Beautiful is much better than James Blunt!
More than X Factor, Even more than Shayne Ward...
Maria Lawson is back but with her first album which I have gave a listen to it and its very simular to "Beverley Knight" type of songs. Its a great album and they are a few Tracks what have been Pre-Recorded such as "My Poet originally recorded by Liberty X" and also "Your Beautiful originally recorded by James Blunt" but these are great Recordings. Above all I have really enjoyed listening to this album and you should really buy this cd and listen to her, her voice so much better than X Factor.
1 - Sleepwalking - A nice slow R&B beat and great vocals, I love the Corus.
2 - Black Mona Lisa - A nice Acoustic type of song with a R&B beat, great vocals.
3 - Give All You Got - Another nice Acoustic type with R&B beat.
4 - My Poet - "Originall sang by Liberty X" great re-recorded and a nice beat.
5 - Old School Lovin - A great R&B song and I love the Corus on this song, infact this is one of my favourites on the CD.
6 - Your Life - Great R&B song another favourite
7 - Let It Break - A great Beat to this song and I love the Corus
8 - His World - This song has a R&B beat but a old style sort of Melody.
9 - Overrated - This song reminds me of Stacie Orrico's new song a great style like that song. Love it and lovely corus and beat.
10 - Naked With You - Slow type of Acoustic song but nice tune
11 - Pretty Face - A nice Piano melody with a nice Drum sound.
12 - Womans Intuition - Nice song with a Guitar sounding and R&B Beat, gr8 vocals again.
13 - Its Love - A slow Acoustic type of song with great Vocals & Lyrics.
14 - Your Beautiful - "Originally sang by James Blunt" but this verison of Maria's is a great recording to with like Gospel back singers towards the middle of the song. Great song.
This album is what I expected, a great cd to listen to anywhere.
Great Singer, Good Songs
I confess to feeling a bit sorry for Maria Lawson. There's no question that she has a tremendous and versatile voice and is probably more talented than X-Factor winner Shayne Ward. But currently in the UK we don't seem to have an appetite for black, female artists (especially if they're not doing the R & B/Hip-Hop thing) so I think this album's going to struggle. That's a great shame because there are several really strong songs and performances here: the lovely Chi-Lites inspired Sleepwalking, Black Mona Lisa and a great ballad with soaring hook called It's Love. And Maria's version of James Blunt's 'Your Beautiful' is surprisingly good. Of course, what this album really needs is a massive hit single and maybe that's the problem. In the current musical climate I can't see it happening.
But if you like a powerful, soulful voice coupled with a decent set of well arranged, pop-tinged tunes give Maria Lawson a try. It would be nice to see someone give Beverley Knight a run for her money.
