Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
It’s inspired a hit musical. The soundtrack has sold in its millions. And it’s still, arguably, the most popular film on Patrick Swayze’s curriculum vitae. Most worrying of all, perhaps, is that Dirty Dancing is now more than twenty years old. Now that’s scary.

Still, it does offer the excuse for a special anniversary release, and that’s exactly what we have here. And, to be fair, the film has never looked better. The story is still as straightforward and simple as it always was, baked just to the point where it can support the aforementioned Swayze and Jennifer Grey strutting their stuff. But Dirty Dancing nonetheless continues to work well to this day, with its rarely-rivalled, sizzling mix of romance, energy and music.

Of course, it’s an easy film to pick holes in, should you be inclined to do so. After all, at heart it’s a well packaged piece of hokum, that’s never likely to contend in a Top 100 movies poll. But to pick holes would be churlish, and perhaps to miss the point. Because Dirty Dancing’s mantra is to entertain, and it delivers on that promise with some conviction. The late Emile Ardolino wisely keeps his direction zippy, and the two leads really do look like they’re having the time of their life.

Granted, this latest re-release isn’t going to convert sceptics to the ways of Dirty Dancing, and the unfortunate, unwelcome sequel will remain a blot on its copybook. But this original is hard to beat, and it’s still a hard dish to resist. --Jon Foster

Synopsis
Headstrong 17-year-old Baby Houseman hardly expects her family's usual summer vacation in the Catskills to be momentous. But then Baby spies Johnny Castle, the resort's dance instructor from the wrong side of the tracks. Johnny's facing a crisis: his dance partner and friend Penny is pregnant and has reluctantly decided to get an abortion. This leaves Johnny a solo act--until Baby agrees to take Penny's place. She has to learn how to dance first, however, and as Johnny teaches her the choreography's sexy, seductive moves, the two fall in love. But Baby's father believes that Johnny is the creep who got Penny pregnant, and he furiously orders Baby to end the relationship. Baby knows that Johnny's innocent--and with her feisty idealism and his dance talent, the two will prove to Baby's father that their love is worth fighting for.

I really enjoyed the movie5
Dirty Dancing [1987] is a movie which I really enjoyed watching. What really appeals to me about the movie, its nice and simple storyline. The focal point is the bonding between a sexy dance instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze) and a rich girl Baby who volunteers to cover as a dancing partner based in a holiday resort. The close friendship suffers major setbacks. Does the movie reach a happy ending? All will be revealed in the movie.

The soundtracks accompanying the movie are excellent which include She like the wind, Hungry Eyes and not forgetting Time of your life. The movie is a simply a feel good movie, which really lightens your mood. It maybe a little outdated, but the musical legacy it leaves behind has been carried on. Since the movie celebrates its 20th anniversary, a special edition of the movie should be released this year.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and a great collector item in my DVD set. If you appreciate a movie with a good storyline and makes you feel great, then Dirty Dancing will appeal to you. This is the special quality which I admire about any movie. So I will conclude this review with saying "Have the time of your life". This literally means enjoy the movie and feel good, which I certainly did.

You will have the time of your life!4
Don't buy Dirty Dancing if you want to be swept away by an incredible plot and fabulous sweeping cinematography. This is NOT what this is about. It's a simple love story about Baby and Johnny. Baby is a rich girl who is away with her parents at an old-fashioned hotel which offers dancing lessons, canoeing etc. While staying at the hotel she comes into contact with Johnny, a cocky, sexy (very sexy) dancer who is forbidden from using his 'dirty' dancing moves! Romance ensues when Baby offers to cover Johnny's usual dancing partner at a performance. While Johnny teaches Baby how to dance we get the 'Hungry Eyes sequence' amongst other great tracks. But will their love survive? You will enjoy this film if you're a lady and you love a bit of harmless fun which is all this really is. The dancing is great, Swayze oozes sex appeal and the lines are corny but memorable! Watch out for 'She's Like The Wind' which Swayze sings himself. For me it's the best song of the film.

In 1987 the guy in the video shop kept saying:5
You don't want to rent that it's just a woman's film you'll hate it!

After almost a year I thought s*d this I'm going to watch it !

I did and at the end of the film I had a tear in my eye.

Great film - great soundtrack - and in my humble opinion a film for anyone who retains a bit of humanity,

But don't take my word for it - at this price watch so you can judge who's right-me or the guy in my video shop in 1987
