Product Description

The cathartic album title perfectly reflected not only its contents but the band itself: following the traumatic breakdown and disappearance of Richey Edwards, the other Manics were left to pick up the pieces--it was an extraordinary and unexpected recovery. Perhaps most striking was their new sober image--the make-up, military garb and much of the bravado were gone--and their characteristic disaffection seemed morepertinent and controlled. Despite losing a member, the bandhad discovered a new voice, delivering a collection of powerful and socially aware songs. Poignantly, Edwards' lyrics graced songs including "Kevin Carter" and "Small Black Flowers . . . ", all delivered in James Dean Bradfield's emotionaltones.

Customer Reviews

The day the Manics went mega5
This album was the point when the Manics started to sell by the bucketload and finally reach the status they had envisaged for years before. It is therefore even more tragic that Richey, the one who most craved the fame and glamour wasn't there to live the dream.

Its great to see this album getting a grand re-release, with loads of live cuts, b-sides and demos. And a whole DVD of extras as well.

The Brits performance of A Design For Life is worth the entrance fee alone - when James, Nicky and Sean played their hearts out for their lost friend. A truly magical moment.

Lets just hope that next year we get a 15th anniversary Generation Terrorists set of equally high standard.

The Best Manics album5
This was first released back in 1996 and was the first Manics album without Richey Edwards. The shouty brash punk of previous releases, Generation Terrorist and The Holy Bible are replaced by anthemic terrace songs and lilting acoustics. "Australia" "Enola/Alone" and the classic "Design For Life" are the stanouts from the original album but this has so much more, two discs more!

The Brits performance of "Design For Life" the scratchy demos of "Australia" and "The Girl Who Wanted to Be God" not to mention various b-sides, live festival and TV appearences. What a great album.

Absolutely amazing!5
You simply must buy this album!
For me,it's the Manics best album and full of cracking songs.
Everything Must Go,Kevin Carter,A Design For Life - it's just packed full of songs that sound great.
There is so much energy and enthusiasm in their songs and when you take the time to really listen to the lyrics you begin to see the political undertones and great intelligence of the band.

The last album to feature contributions from Richey James before he disappeared in 1995,it has gone double platinum and is a masterpiece of the Britpop scene.
