Customer Reviews

Erratic but groundbreaking4
Dick Dale is, by common consensus, King of the Surf. After he'd recorded 'Misirlou', almost every other band that followed in the genre had a go it, but none equalled it. 'Let's Go Trippin'' was also widely-covered and both numbers are included here. Dale's quickfire guitar and hot band instrumentals are what make this album a winner, but not everything is worth raving about. The songs tend to be relatively tame, due largely to weak vocals. The bonus tracks are particularly strong, however, and Dale's best recordings are seminal.

The father of so much5
I do not do reviews, this is my first. After reading a piece on Dick Dale I decided I wanted Surfer's Choice, that was 3 or 4 years ago. However, because it was out of print and never available from the usual sources (eg ebay or 2nd hand record shops/fairs) in any format I have had to wait until now. It has been well worth it, I find Surfer's Choice absolutely stunning. Rare for me, last night I played this CD three times in a row. And listening to this album you can hear why Dick Dale has been called the father of surf music and how his style of playing has influenced with several artists (Hendrix for one). I am not going to describe it critically, you can do that on All Music Guide, all I am going to say is that for me there is so much I like about this album: the rythmn, the pace. In fact I am wondering if this will be my best buy this year: probably not but a nice thought.
