Len's effective introduction to dance
The introduction of 'Strictly Come Dancing' to our tv screens has opened up a whole new audience to the magic of dancing. It's also made Len Goodman a celebrity and this is perhaps a reason why this DVD potentially has wide appeal. This DVD is therefore aimed at the 'Strictly Come Dancing' audience.
Len does a fine job of introducing each dance, giving a brief summary of its history and going over many of the basic steps with the aid of his helpers. He breaks down the routines extremely well with his clear and easy to understand explanations sprinkled with his touch of humour. It's also exciting to see how the dances look in their more advanced form which Len's shows us with the aid of his helpers.
What must always be remembered about ballroom dancing is the only true way to learn is by attending dance classes. It's true Len just scratches the surface of these dances but anyone who is more serious about dance and therefore more advanced would surely be looking for something more specialised anyway.
This DVD is designed as an introduction for anyone who has a mild interest in dancing and would like a little more basic knowledge. It may wet the appetite of some viewers into attending dance classes. On those terms it works rather well.
Fun but Limited Teaching Content
I like Len Goodman he is a great amabassador for ballroom dance. The set piece dances are well done and entertaining to watch. What lets this one down for me is the teaching content. This is limited to little more than a basic step for each dance. Even if you've never danced before this is not really enough to make anything of the dances. Also while Len explains the steps and he doesn't dance them leaving this to a variety of couples. I think teaching works best if the person dancing does the explaining. If you want tuition get the Ian Waite/Angela Rippon DVD or Ian's latest DVD The Magic of Dance.
Not bad, but expected more content.
Very basic steps for absolute beginners introducing eight popular dances. Speaking as a two-left-footed novice I expected a more structured progressive lesson plan, more routines to practice. Len has nicely scratched the surface and left you wanting much more.
The featured pros on Len's DVD are a great inspiration.
In conclusion, a very short fun introduction to dance.
