Manufacturer's Description
To get their jobs done, knowledge workers in engineering, legal, sales & marketing, finance, human resources, IT and other professions need access to high-value information. Often, that information is obtained through shared documents, forms, 3D designs, spreadsheets, and presentations; in meetings; or through other means. As a result, ad-hoc collaboration among knowledge workers both inside and outside an organization is essential to gathering the information needed to get the job done. But there are many boundaries to collaboration and data sharing, such as security concerns and differing applications and computer platforms. New features and functionality in the Adobe Acrobat 8 software family make it easier than ever for knowledge workers to reliably and more securely collaborate and share data. Also new to the Acrobat 8 family is access to real-time collaboration capabilities. Simply by clicking the 'Start Meeting' button in all of the Acrobat 8 products and Adobe Reader 8 software; users can take advantage of Adobe Breeze Express software for real-time meetings over the Web.
The Acrobat 8 family helps users initiate, manage, and organize ad-hoc collaboration by creating and sharing content-rich documents; combining multiple files into a single, polished Adobe PDF document; managing and organizing feedback to expedite document collaboration; collecting and exchanging high- value information; and controlling document access with confidence.
The Acrobat family has been strengthened to help meet industry-specific requirements regarding information sharing. New tools allow users to permanently remove sensitive text, images, metadata, and other information in an Adobe PDF document. Converting complex, large-format documents into Adobe PDF is significantly faster, and industry-specific markup tools have been enhanced for easier use. New shared reviews streamline collaboration. Review initiators can enable users of free Adobe Reader 8 software to participate in shared reviews using intuitive Acrobat commenting tools. Collecting data from Adobe PDF forms is easy, as Adobe Reader 8 users can now electronically fill out, digitally sign, and locally save an electronic form and its data (when those capabilities have been enabled in Acrobat 8 Professional software and Acrobat 3D, Version 8.) And an enhanced interface lets users quickly choose the task or tool they need so they can get the job done even faster.

Get Nuance Scansoft PDF converter instead
I work in the legal profession where a large amounts of pdf's need to be converted to MS Word to be edited or compared. I work as a Document Specialist in the IT department so I do kinda know what I am talking about. I use Adobe Acrobat extensively day to day and feel inclined to highlight on one or two of Acrobats serious flaws
Dont get me wrong I am a big fan of Adobe Products. Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver etc are by far the best products on the market in their respective fields. Acrobat however is not!
For a start the amount of hard disk space required to install what is essentially a simple application, 470mb is serious bloatware (which Adobe is generally guilty of in all their software). Of more serious concern however is the way it handles conversions.
As Adobe owns the PDF licence you would think their software offering would handle this very well. However with scanned pdf's on a straight conversion to Word, you will get a document with a 'picture' of the pages, useless unless you want that. A bit of jiggery pokery (turning on OCR) does a slightly better job with the text being recognised, but all paragraphs are pasted into Word as frames which when removed will lose the documents integrity (the text will move to the top of the page and will have to be reformatted). More jiggery pokery and perhaps some knowledge of VBA is required to remove these frames, whilst maintaining document integrity.
Look up Scansoft PDF Converter Professional 5 Enterprise Edition instead. Without fuss or any settings changes it will convert a scanned PDF with text you can edit without frames. It will also retain the integrity of a document when you convert it from your hard drive (ie when you convert it back the document will come back EXACTLY the same with styles and formatting intact Adobe doesnt do this), it has all the features of Standard and more to boot, it takes up less hard disk space (200mb), is a great deal faster in all operations and on top of all that is CHEAPER than Adobe Acrobat Standard.
Like I say I am not an Adobe basher and as mentioned many of their products are the best in the industry, but unfortunetely Acrobat as stands is not fit for purpose in many of the functions where you would expect it to deliver.
Excellent for professional use
I think I might have gone for the pro version, but not really necessary as this does everything I need for work.
