Mature soul
There are some really cool easy going soul songs to be found on this CD and I think this is a really good album. I love David's voice and I particularly appreciate the maturity and depth of his lyrics. Sure, on the whole, he treads the same path on subject matter as many of his peers but he does it in a way that makes me stop, listen and think. And when he also does social commentary like on the Gil Scott-Heron like title track, (one of my favourites), it's as exciting as it is refreshing to hear.
Other personal standout tracks are "Lady" with Keisha Jackson, which sounds really old school - always a winner with this listener - and "Words" with India.Arie. I think it's such a really nice song and definitely single material. I also really like his cover of the 1985 Level 42 hit, "Something About You". I was hooked on that song back in the day and it's nice to hear another person's take on it.
Most of the reviews I've seen of this album compare it with his previous one, which I don't have (yet) and interestingly, for some reason, there are some tracks from that album on this one. I think I will be buying "3 Chords & the Truth" after listening to this though.
Some folk have also compared David with Bill Withers. I don't see the similarities myself but I guess I can see where people are coming from when they make them. Personally, I see him as somewhere between Dwele and Anthony Hamilton. If you like those dudes, you'll like Anthony David.
All in all, while not wall to wall excitement, it's better than a lot of the stuff out there today and well worth a listen. I was going to give it four stars but the tracks I do like, I like so much, I think it deserves five. I'm glad I bought it.
His second album...his second 5 out of 5!!
Having caught on to Anthony David late I had heard most of this on his website and his My Space page and had been waiting to get my hands on this CD.
There really isn't a bad track on here. Lady is a lovely duet and feels like the sort of love songs we all grew up with, Red Clay Chronicles reminds me of Gil Scott Heron and Kinfolk is just so catchy. The UK dome release has 50/50 love, Georgia Peach and Spitting Game as bonus tracks these are all from his debut album Three Chords and the Truth (that CD earns 5/5 from me too and is well worth getting). Spitting game is a superb raw southern soul song that I play to death.
This is raw organic soul music at its best...thanks to Anthony, India Arie and the sublime Raul Midon (check out State of Mind) for making my tedious hours in the car more bearable.
Anthony David is isn't following the flock and writing predictable songs to make himself "Famous" he is enjoying making the best music he can and while it is of this quality I will be first in the queue to buy it!
