Vintage comedy by Jimmy Perry and David Croft. 1940. Britain is on the alert for an imminent Nazi invasion. With full-time troops occupied overseas, the coastal defences are left to a handful of veteran soldiers-The Home Guard. And in Walmington-on-Sea, one inept, feeble and inadequately-armed platoon is very keen to do its bit. Led by the self-appointed Captain Mainwaring (a bank manager nicknamed Napoleon), the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard are a casual, disruptive troop. His second-in-command, Sergeant Wilson, has the breeding Mainwaring lacks but is largely ineffectual. And Corporal Jones, the local butcher and a veteran of the Boer War, tempers his eagerness with an infallible ability to completely mess-up anything he is asked to do. Outstanding among the rest of the platoon are Private Walker, a black marketeer who can lay his hands on anything - for a price; mummy's boy, Private Pike; Private Frazer, a cynical Scottish undertaker who always foresees trouble (and is usually right); and the oldest of them all, the near-incontinent Private Godfrey. With Mainwaring's irritating pomposity, and the platoon's total incompetence, life in the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard is more chaotic than most. Best British Comedy
I bought this box (Series 1-5) plus the separately sold series 6-9. I wish there were another 20 series of the best comedy I've ever seen (and I have seen a lot thanks to Amazon).

Every character of the platoon is unique as are other supplementary characters like the warden, the vicar, the verger etc. My wife and me watched the last episode of the 9th series last night and we are now both depressed thinking that we are going to miss the guys (and lassies as private Frazer calls them).

No matter how expensive it is, do buy all nine series and enjoy. It's worth every penny. It's a pity that almost all actors died in the early 80s.

Shame on BBC for not offering subtitles to non english speakers. This applies to all their excellent productions and only shows disrespect for foreigners. With the advanced technology of our days, a translation would have a minimal cost but would inrease the number of potential customers significantly.

So, my advice to overseas customers is: buy the series only if you are fluent in English. Otherwise you will have difficulty even with the HoH subtitles which roll very fast and the wording is a mixture of 70's English and Scottish.

Classic comedy at its very best - hours of first class viewing - and excellent value.
