Mumm-ra - bright future?
I agree with the previous review. This EP does not really do the band justice and their new single 'What Would Steve Do?' is a cracker!
Having seen this band live I would say they were very good and that they have a bright future ahead although I also saw them supporting the Automatic as well and to say that they were awful is a bit harsh! The Horrors? They were awful!
As for Mumm-ra, investment in their current and future releases is certainly not 'Out of the Question'!!
they're great
saw this lot supporting the automatic (who were awful). really creative, exciting young band. clever song structures and almost a bit prog at times.
this single doesn't really do them justice. the EP from earlier in the year was much better. but new single What Would Steve Do? is a cracker.
Pretty pretty, easy does it.
Hot flavour act dabble and question the notion, `What makes a radio-play hit?' The result is something latter-day Feeder are famous for and make teenage girls swoon from a fifty yards distance.
Pump, pump, pummel... Guitars are down-stroked in that style the Strokes are infamous for (even though the song itself sounds nothing like them), and follows the typical four-chord rock ballad progression. At the signposted chorus, the progression takes a slight change of course and distortion pedals are stomped, signifying to all that, hey, `this is the chorus and memorable point in the tune because it is LOUD'.
There's nothing wrong with it all as such. It's a very valiant attempt of an over-used style. But it's quite slippery, despite it's clear intentions, with lyrics that have no substance or obvious meaning that you (or indeed anyone else) can relate to (`Lights out of the darkness / what did you see, what did you see? // And I don't see the likeness / I'm trying to see, I'm trying to see').
The god-annoying thing is the guitar melody at the close of the song, which is, at best, the greatest riff your brother came up with in his first year of guitar tuition - i.e. it is one-noted niceness, but is repetitive to the point of being irritable.
It gets stuck in the head, but that isn't the be all and end all, is it? A nail or shard of glass can do exactly the same feat, but many would agree that this isn't too comfortable or entertaining...
