With a voice like Stevie Wonder, a production sound that recalls the string-laden, slinky-bass disco of Studio 54 and a penchant for funky dance moves and outlandish hats, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay has successfully managed to straddle the underground and mainstream for the best part of 15 years. High Times brings together 19 of his band's hits to date, ranging from early 90s acid jazz classics "When You Gonna Learn", "Too Young To Die" and "Blow Your Mind", to later successes such as "Canned Heat", "Cosmic Girl", "Virtual Insanity" and on to recent songs from 2005 album Dynamite, such as "Feels Just Like It Should" and "7 Days In Sunny June". There are also two new tracks - the current single "Runaway" and the edgier "Radio", both of which continue the Jamiroquai tradition of mildly euphoric dancefloor disco-soul. A time capsule
It is clear that jamiroquai are something of an unusual band. I remember seeing them for the first time on TV in around 1993, (I think it was the show, The Word) performing Too Young To Die, and immediately clocked the retro 70's jazz funk style and as i was and still am a fan of such music, immediately became a fan and went out and bought the single.
The fender rhodes keys, the Stevie Wonder-esque voice, the funky bass and horns,and the sci-fi imagery and lyrics, all came to make a great sound and package, and whats more the first proper British jazz funk since Light of The World, and a great antidote to the Brit pop or electronicky stuff around.
Their first album was a constant visitor to my Cd player.
What was more surprising that they became so popular, as they were so unusual.
OK, the Acid Jazz movement was in full swing, but they transcended that and outlasted it.
This Cd shows the development of the band and their sound, from the early raw jazz funk tracks through the disco-funk of A Funk Odyssey to the later stuff, it is clear that the sound has changed over that time, yet still sounds like Jamiroquai.
What is also clear is that the earlier stuff is far superior to their latest offerings.
They produced five top notch albums all with a clear progression of style, and then their last one; and that was a huge disappointment. The edginess had gone from the music, to be replaced by a bland self satisfied sound playing lip service to their earlier work, trapped in some kind of disco-pap hell.
One of the aspects of Jamiroquai's music that made it so different; the wonderful didgeridoo inspired instrumentals had disappeared a while ago, and their loss was keenly felt.
The stuff from Dynamite all sounds a bit samey, as do the new offerings here.
The tracks here are presented in chronological order so you can see what i mean when you listen.
Great band, but they've gone off the boil as this collection demonstrates.
I hope when they return, they do something fresh. perhaps a return to more jazz funk material as this works well for them. No more disco!

Cosmic!
Jay Kay is undoubtably one of our finest songwriter/recording artists. Everybody has heard at least two or three of his songs over the last 15 years, yes 15 years! The beauty of this man is his longevity to produce songs of the same sound but somewhat different in their own way. As far as I'm concerned this man is one of our most prolific artists. His uncanny knack of recording catchy, soulful, from the heart tunes should put him way up their with the rest. If you want to boogie at home in the car or at a party stick this one on. Not all of the tracks will please you but trust me you won't be disapointed.

Music should be like this
High Times: Singles 1992-2006 by ~ Jamiroquai is an album which deserve the highest praise for delivering quality music. Music should be like this, as it tuneful, sheer class and most of all quality, not all this manufactured rubbish which the music industry is bombarded with today. The album features some memorable funky and dance music closely associated with the 90's. The album features 19 singles, which are great joy and pleasure to listen to. Some of big and memorable hits featured in this album include Too young to die, Blow your mind, Emergency on planet earth, Space Cowboy, Virutal Insanity, Cosmic Girl and so on. Listening to the singles sure relightens your mood and makes you feel good. It is feel good music.

High Times: Singles 1992-2006 by ~ Jamiroquai is what real music should entail. This album certainly satisfies my musical taste. If you love dance and funky music, you will certainly like this album. It is a great album, well worth purchasing for the quality it brings.
