CD Description
While there's certainly a proud tradition of British Metal, much of it lies in the past. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden may have been the vanguard of the once-thriving Brit metal institution, but you rarely hear much about contemporary thrash coming from across the pond, especially the kind of athletic, blistering metalcore played by Sheffield's Bring Me the Horizon. Mixing guttural screams with death-metal growls, the vocals ride a careening wave of classic speed-metal guitarand helicopter-blade drum rolls. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS displays the young band's increasing skill with manic time shiftsand nimble electric solos. If there was any doubt that the land of Black Sabbath could still produce metal worth hearing, Bring Me the Horizon handily eliminate it.

Promising Debut...
Count Your Blessings is undoubtedly one of the most hyped albums of the year, and it is therefore extremely hard to be objective when listening to this album. BMTH are somewhat a Marmite complex - you either love 'em or hate 'em. Many will be deterred by the 'scene kid' image of the band (myself included to begin with), but this should not detract from the band as a whole. Furthermore, many are also persuaded to be malicious as BMTH have enjoyed such a meteoric rise to stardom, when other, equally deserving bands remain in the metal underground. But... this is a solid debut album and very, very impressive (without meaning to sound patronising) for such a young band. This is not the average now common-place emo pap that you might expect from BMTH. Count Your Blessings is a hard-hitting accomplished metal album with face melting solos, pounding double pedal and chilling vocals. The songs (except for the somewhat out of place 'Fifteen Fathoms Counting') are fast, technical as you like, furious anthems of youthful exuberance - BMTH can, and will continue to, rise if they continue in this rich vein of metallic form.
However, as I. Lehnert mentions below, Count Your Blessings does not necessarily break any boundaries, operating in a safe, albeit more underground area of the metal spectrum. One cannot help but think when listening that BMTH are perhaps only a poor-man's Black Dahlia Murder. The Black Dahlia Murder do the same general genre as BMTH but with somewhat more technicality. For instance, if you think the drumming on Count Your Blessings is insane (not saying it isn't, I wish I could drum like that!) try Miasma by TBDM for size. BMTH are also not overall as 'tight' as more established bands. This will, however, yet come. Bands exist to improve and BMTH do have areas to improve on, the lyrics being one, but they have one hell of a foundation to do it from. Count Your Blessings is a good album from a good band, who can yet become great with experience. This album should definitely not be avoided because of who it is by and is definitely worth the tenner it will cost you. Buy it if you consider yourself to be a self-respecting metal fan - it will certainly tide you over at least until the next Black Dahlia Murder album comes out. 4/5

That's a list of absolute balls-out metal bands in their many forms that are just as, if not heavier than BMTH, but that manage to not make songs that sound like a horrible mess of noise.
First off, this is not 'pure death metal' as some bright spark put it, it's metalcore, ignoring the obvious hardcore influences in this record is just stupid. Unfortunately, most of the music just sounds like one big breakdown, now there's nothing wrong with breakdowns, but an entire CD? It's really awful to listen to, there's nothing interesting about it, some loud noise happens while Oli sounds like he's choking on his own fringe. Poor riffs, terrible vocals and an average drummer do not, a good band make.
These kids are not the saviours of metal, they are not the kings of death metal, and they suck just as much as people say they do. I'd like to point out that I listened to these guys and thought they sucked, before I saw pictures of them and how they dress, so this isn't a hate rant against scene kids.
On the few plus-sides, this album IS better than the EP, there's slightly more cohesion, and it isn't quite such a horrible mess. Also, they are better live than on CD, they do create a heavy sound on stage, so fair does to them, but that's where the fun ends with this band.
Don't believe the hype, there's very littl redeeming qualities about this band.
A beautiful wave of screams, bellows and riffs which could raise the dead.
Many people hate Bring Me The Horizon.
Many people think that they are a band which promotes fashion rather than music.
Many people refer to them as 'Bring Me The Haircut'.
Many people think that this type of music is not music atall.
Well...............This album will shut them up.
'Count Your Blessings' is a dark, horiffic yet fantastic experience throughout 10 tracks which will make your ears bleed.
My personal favourite track is Track 3 ('Braile'/'For Stevie Wonder's Eyes Only') Which slams into mindblowing riffs from the first second and the lyrical hatred of 19 Year-Old Oli Sykes combined to make an amazing track with the best opening lyrics on the whole album,
'It's Three Eighteen, Mouth Tastes Like The Corpse Of Every Pregnant Teen'.
The only slight dissapointment with this album is that it is rather short, but we'll get over that because it's still a masterpiece.
Bring Me The Horizon have shaped the way in which the public see Deathcore/Metalcore.
If you still think that Bring Me The Horizon are just a bunch of talentless teens after purchasing this album, then maybe try something a little softer on the ears.
I hope this review has helped you into deciding whether to buy this album or not.
If you like this album then I seriously suggest buying these:

I Killed The Prom Queen-Music For The Recently Deceased
