Manufacturer's Description

Ambisound for full no-fuss multichannel surround sound

The Ambisound surround sound system, powered by a full multi-channel amplifier, uses an advanced digital sound processing technology that provides multi-channel surround sound from fewer speakers. By positioning independent drivers at precise angles, a powerful multi-channel surround sound is produced and experienced in any room shape and size.

HDMI 1080i with high definition video upscaling

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a direct digital connection that can carry digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio. By eliminating the conversion to analogue signals it delivers perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. HDMI is fully backward-compatible with DVI (Digital Video Interface).

MP3 Line-in for music playback from Portable Media Players

MP3 Line-in uses Plug and Play technology that allows direct playback of MP3 content via the home theatre system by simply plugging your portable MP3 player into the built-in headphone jack. Now you can enjoy the superb sound quality of the Philips Home Theatre System while playing your favourite music from your portable MP3 player.

USB Direct plays photos and music from USB flash drives

Simply plug your device into the USB port on your Philips DVD system. Your digital music and photos will be played directly from the device. Now you can share your favourite moments with family and friends.

Compact design that fits anywhere

Quick and easy set-up for no-fuss installation

Wooden speakers for great natural sound

Phillips Sonowave Home Cinema4
For a compact system that gives real home cinema performance you can't go far wrong with this. Whilst I purchased this as part of a package with a Phillips Plasma Ambilight TV this system has great all round sound effect and the massive subwoofer performance sounds like thunder around the house and vibrates your chair, great! A simple digital cable audio link to the TV, in addition to the HDMI, gives good sound performance from a TV source so that you can get this type of performance for all programmes. DVD playback is superb quality and the radio tuner has very good clarity once the FM aerial is positioned correctly. Speakers look great and funky with no cover fitted.

I use the system in a small (4m x 4m) square shaped room dedicated to home theatre and therefore cannot comment on use in a larger room with additional furniture.

PHILIPS DVD Home Theatre System HTS6510/05 DivX Ultra5
I initially bought this model having lead to belive it was an HD DVD player however it is not. After my dissapointment of realising that it wasnt HD DVD, once it was connected to my Philips HD Ready 42" LCD via HDMI the quality instantly struck me. The audio is excellent it really does kick out a great sound. Once the speakers are correctly set up the 5.1 Digital Dolby does really come alive. One of the first DVDs we watched on it was Terminator 2, i dont think my neighbours were too happy but it was an amazing sound. The DVD system also has Digital inputs as well as HDMI connections. Software upgrades can aslo be added when available from Philips. This system is a must especially if you just want two speakers but also have Dolby Digital 5.1 sourround.

Very capable home cinema system5
Well, I've had this for a few weeks now so it's time to write a review. If you're after a 2.1 system then you can't go far wrong with this. Perhaps like me you're tired of all this nonsense over who will win the next generation DVD. Will it be blu-ray or HD-DVD? It's like VHS against Betamax in the early 80's. Whichever one you buy into I bet the other side will win and by the time a clear winner emerges the world will have moved onto digital downloads which is the future anyway, broadband speeds allowing. So what this system like then? Let's be clear, a 2.1 system will never sound quite like a dedicated 5.1 despite Philips best attempts using Ambisound to reproduce 5.l using only 2 speakers and a subwoofer but I have to say they make a damn good attempt at it. The sound quality is excellent and I must admit on quite a few occasions I found myself looking over my shoulder because I thought the sound was becoming behind me such is Ambisound. That subwoofer is enough to make your chair vibrate. So the sound quality is on the whole pretty good: not as good as a dedicated 5.1 system but it makes a damn good attempt at it and as I say on few occasions fooled me into looking over my shoulder. The picture quality is superb. This system takes an ordinary DVD and upscales it to almost Blu-ray/HD-DVD quality. It's not quite the same but I reckon you would be hard pressed to spot the difference. Mind you, you have to have an HD ready TV for this to work. I have a Sony 32 inch LCD and it looks impressive. You must buy a HDMI cable for this to work and this is not included so it has to be bought seperately. However, once connected the picture quality looks great. The set-up of this system is a breeze. I was up and running in minutes. This system is NOT mulit-regional out of the box. I have a mixture of regional 1 and 2 DVDs. Setting it to multi-regional so you can play DVDs from around the world is easy.

1. Make sure there is no DVD in the player.

2. Switch on the player and press DISPLAY on the remote.

3. Key 99990 on the remote.

The screen will then show Regional 0. You're now all set to go. Sorted. So, in conclusion, if you're after a 2.1 home cinema system that does a pretty good job of emulating a 5.1 minus all the bloody wires you get with a 5.1, then this is it. Excellent sound, superb picture quality (upscaling if you have a HDMI cable and HD Ready TV) then I would highly recommend this player.
