They just get better and better..
What can i say about Incubus. For a start they areone of my favourite bands. I knew i would love this album long before it came out, i had faith that with every release they out do the last so this would be the same.

'A crow left of the murder' although it took time to get into proved to be an exceptional album, especially after you see some of the tracks live on the Alive at Red Rocks Dvd.
'Morning View' is one of my favourite albums of all time. Start to finish, beautiful.
'Make yourself', with tracks like Drive and Pardon Me was a good step in a different direction from 'S.c.i.e.n.c.e', the classic full length debut album that caught everyones attention. I know some are still adament that they went down hill from that album. I strongly disagree, they have merely matured and experimented, developing their own unique style and sound.

So, being highly anticipated, with everyone asking themselves what stance they would take on a new album, does 'Light Genades' deliver to the fans?
I think so.

For a start this album is far more accessible than the last, leaving out alot of the experimental sides and going for a slightly cleaner and crystal clear approach. Its like they knew what the fans wanted this time and delivered.
Right from the start, when i first listened and got to the end of the 3rd or 4th track i was already desperate to hear them again.

'Quicksand' is a slow steady introduction that just sets the atmosphere of the album beautifully. It leads into 'A kiss to send us off' which really gets the blood pumping building at the end to an amazing wave of sound.
Then we have 'Dig', for me the albums most powerful track and in my opinion one of their most beautiful songs ever made. I cant tell you how much i love listening to this track.
'Anna-Moly', the single is a catchy upbeat classic with brilliant guitarwork, nicely placed in between the slower paced 'Dig' and the next, 'Love Hurts'. A beautiful ballad, set to be a single i believe. The title track is a relentless fast paced punk rock track, very clever lyrics, over before its started it seems but with impact at the same time.
Then we get the first of 2 part 'Earth to Bella', very short, i almost wonder if they should have made one full length track to close the album on and left this one out here. But still it leads quite nicely to 'Oil and Water'. A real grower of a track, in fact i'll point out at this point the 2nd half of the album in general takes a bit of time to get into. But again an amazing track, building right to the end climax. 'Diamonds and Coal' is a nice track touching on the ups and downs of a relationship. 'Rogues' is very upbeat and catchy song, with time very likeable. 'Paper Shoes' is a very different track, almost sad or subdued? But it fits still. And 'Pendulous Threads', builds into a funky, catchy energetic release leading up to the 'Earth to Bella' outro, togetehr both a fitting end to this amazing album.

Its just an effortlessly brilliant collection of songs. Quite varied in style, Mike Einzegger said before it came out "Its a mess! It sounds like 13 songs by 13 different artists!". Well i dont quite agree, but it is certainly special.

True fans are in for a treat here, otherwise at least give it a try, im sure you wont be dissapointed. Brandon Boyd just writes beautiful songs and lyrics, Mike Einzegger is unreal on guitar, they are all just so good at what they do...

Looking forward to the re-sheduled tour dates in september!!

Light Grenades review
I've been an incubus fan for a number of years now and own everything that they've done...ever. If you are a Incubus follower or listener i'd recommend buying this album. It's a tenner well spent basically.

The reason why this album doesn't get 4 stars is because of Earth to Bella (both parts). I reckon the guys from Incubus would be the first to admit that these songs don't work on this album. I cannot flaw anything else on this album.

Quicksand- Really good song. I really didn't expect this kind of opening from an Incubus album, but this shwos class, exploration of a strange time signature, and it shwos that they have structured this album really well. And the vocals are bloody awesome

A Kiss to send us off- Love the way that the ending of quicksand and this song blend together. This song has got everything going for it. Catchy riff typical of Incubus' recent stuff, great chorus, moving verses. BLoody great. Brandon again excells (but when doesn't here... Earth to bella perhaps).

Dig- I've got a friend who loves this song, and i can see why. Really well thought out song, love the electric/acoustic juxtaposition. Good lyrics, drumming could be a bit more exciting i suppose (but i'm a drummer and i have high expectations from Jose). Classic Incubus song, up there with Wish you were here, Southern girl, Drive.

Anna Molly- Its so god it makes me laugh. I find the guitar quite cheeky in the introduction, and the bass part in the verse. Really well put together song. Perhaps the highlight of the album for me. I love the drumming, thank you Jose.

Love Hurts- Shame about the emo like title, but the song is bloody good, typical recent incubus song really. Good lyrics. 'Tonight we drink to youth' muhaha.

Light grenades- Why is it so short! Great song, love the riff, it has real energy, yet it is only 2:20. Would have liked it to be longer. One of the only glitchs in the album. That and Earth to bella.

Earth to Bella- Oh god, what were you thinking guys.

Oil and water- That's more like it. Nice little riff with arty vocals, good drumming, nice bit of synth, well ballanced effects from mike.

Diamonds and coal- wasn't a big fan of this at first, but enjoy it very much now. I like the chromaticism in vocals/ guitar. Nice keyboard providing a bit of atmosphere (which i believe is played by DJ Kilmore), incidentally i wish he played a bigger part in this album.

Rogues- Intro riff almost reminiscent of System of a down. I love the riff when it all kicks off. This is another point where the album reaches great heights. Really powerful, Brandon lets go a bit like the earlier incubus albums. Tons of energy, love the lyrics and little guitar intruptions and the different directions, and everything.

Paper shoes- A really underated song- I love the fact that incubus are experimenting with different time signatures. This is another example. I just love the drumming in this song and the acoustic riff, great, great songwriting. Brandon shines through as always.

Pendulous threads- Innovative, great drumming at begginning, like the distorted guitar stuff going on, and the other effects. And then the unexpected interruption when the song actually gets into a coherant piece of music. Genius! Love the clapping Brandon.


Earth to Bella 2- Shocker. Yuk. Please never again.


BLoody good album on the whole. If you like Incubus and are expecting it to be really good listen to me. Don't be put off when you listen to it for the first time. Work with it, it gets better and better.

"The Pattern"
Well this is odd but like the other reviews of this so far it applies to me also, the album seems instantly accessable. I have been an incubus fan for a long time but for the other albums from Incubus that I own I have never managed to like it so much after the first listen. The mild but seemingly striking opener "Quicksand" sets an undescribable tone for the rest of the album which is carried through each song from the rocky and fast title track to the dreamy "Diamonds and Coal". The album really does feel complete as every song feels in the right place and come one after another from start to finish almost linking together.
Again about the instant accessability, I struggle to think of few other albums I've bought that seem as if you could listen to it over and over again as I have done after putting the album on my iPod, but more importantly other people have wrote about this album in the same way that you can instantly be hooked so that cannot just be coincidence...

This is one fantastic album and I'm sure you'll agree wheather a long-term Incubus fan or only just heard of them.
