Side Splittingly Funny
I was delighted to get my mitts on this boxset and managed to wait until christmas until I viewed them. It's well worth the wait!
Jack Dee's sardonic, deadpan humour is very funny, his observations on all manner of subjects including Builders, wardrobe space, arguments, embarrasing dogs, the british love of sunbathing, etc. are all very entertaining and I especially enjoyed his 1998 tour, which is the longer of the four discs included in this set.
Jack's deadpan humour might not be to everyones taste, but you can't help but laugh at his comical observations, and the way he expresses them. As a new fan of Jack, having watched the discs I am now a complete fan of Jack's and recommend it to anyone who is new to Jack or a fan already. Sit down and enjoy one of the finest comedians the UK has to offer!
Mixed bag of performances renders 3 worthless
The Palladium performance from the early 90s is a million miles away from what Jack developed into by the time he hit the apollo in 2002 and again after that. He is a menacing figure with a mood like someone with a hangover from hell - which is his trademark to some extent of course. But something about early Jack is very different, more original and interesting than his later work imo. The two apollo performances seem to me a bit of a sell out. By 2002 he had gone more mainstream and watered down than ever before and while i still enjoy the apollo stuff(often on uk gold/dave of course) it feels like some of the soul is missing and they are quite simply poor in comparison to the first 2 performances on this 4 disc set.
Now the palladium as I say is much more interesting, mainly because he talks like an intelligent, common sense stand up rather than the baffoon, idiot type character he has now become, and the edginess of the palladium performance is just downright scary in places, not many comedians can actually scare you and make you laugh at the same time, its like watching the stand up equivalent of the shining and yet it still very funny indeed, I prefer the humour from this show to the apollo easily. And now the piece de resistance - Live In London '98. Its quite simply the funniest stand up show I have ever seen from Jack, or any other stand up for that matter which is saying something because I have a lot of stand up on my shelf including Bill Hicks, Lee Evans and Bill Bailey to name a few, and this dvd is the best I have ever seen. He has began to mellow just the right amount from the Jack Nicholson-esque Palladium show, but is still hacked off enough that his true feelings about life shine through without being diluted and it is balanced nicely with the new goofy side to his character he was now starting to develop that it makes every minute of the show hilarious. Perfect balance between anger and goofy makes for the best stand up I have ever witnessed. Shame the apollo swings to far in the goofy direction, but then that is usually what happens when the bbc get involved.
My advice is buy the Live In London seperately on dvd or vhs and spare yourself the cash it is more intelligent, balanced and unbelieveably funny if you dig a more thought out style of humour - you can watch the apollo ones on dave although they are not really worth watching anyway, depending on your taste in humour of course if you like more mainstream goofy humour then knock yourself out with those ones, and the palladium one well, although it is well worth watching in all likelihood you will watch it once and then it will gather dust, Live In London is the one you will keep grabbing off the shelf time and time again
Jack, the King of Comedy
A total bargain of a box set, Jack, is one of my favourite English comedians and here are 5 DVDs all in one box. Brilliant stand up collection, I loved it so much I bought another as a gift!
