Amazon.co.uk Review
It's nigh on impossible to review a young, indie rock band anymore without referencing their predecessors, their colleagues who have created the anxiety of influence. Here, David Monks' voice, combined with Joshua Hook's compressed-spray on guitar, certainly conjure early Strokes, but then comparisons just fall short. Tokyo Police Club's command of multiple tempos and rhythmic palettes sets up spacey atmospheres to tumble through, with a hefty blast at their beck and call. There's a languid undertow here, Monks pulling you in with a slow, warm-water voice only to let his pals bludgeon you with just-so rhythms that, even in flight, last a sharp, fast 2 minutes on average. --Andrew Bartlett
CD Description
The debut mini-album from hotly tipped Canadian rockers Tokyo Police Club delivers eight fast and furious punk and dance tinged numbers combining influences such as the Strokes and any number of 70's punk outfits. With humorous lyrical subject matter, epic yet hook-laden guitar riffs and multiple rhythms within a single song, 'A Lesson In Crime' has a lasting appeal and is a sure indication of great things to come from this high-energy quartet.

Amazing
This is a great first release from Tokyo Police Club. There are now filler tracks, its eight solid tracks. The ep is very short only clocking in at around 18 mins but suits the songs appropriately. Its fast, punchy, passionate music, no major breaks just an intense barrage of amazing riffs and vocals. The lyrics are unusual and very interesting, they range from Citizens of Tomorrow possibly about affects of global warming, Cut Cut Paste an unusual first kiss or La Ferrassie - based on a location in France where palentologists discovered the remains of ancient humans, where its believed humans first buried the dead. This sounds deep, but its far from it. TPC are a quirky, upbeat indie pop punk band. A really refreshing unique band. Buy this album!
Young, charming and brilliant - but there's more...
There are some bands that release an album or an EP and you can tell they have much more to offer, Tokyo Police Club is one of those bands. Even though this album is great, I can tell these Canadian indie rockers have so much more to give, a wider pallete to envision, this is just a taster.
From the pounding drum rhythms of the first track you can tell you are about to be taken on a ride, Tokyo Police Club take the listener to an outer world where robots enslave mankind (Citizens Of Tomorrow) to where a time when love is illegal (Cheer It On.
Nature Of The Experiment is their single and it rages with glorious synths and tremelo picking guitars, in fact, almost every track has tremelo pikcing, which may become samey after a while, but that is TPC's sound. The drumming is constant, the bass is bold and punchy and the keyboards are errie and spacey. David Monks voice is charming and slow, as if he hasn't slept for days, but never sounds bored, the end of Shoulders & Arms is strangly moving.
Of course no first album is without hitches, as I said before the guitar is rather samey, and sparse. The songs are very short and seem to be about the same thing. Still there is much to like here, the songs are catchy and my personal favourite Citizens Of Tomorrow is a fantastic tune, and last song La Ferrassie is haunting aswell as beautiful.
Enjoy.
Bloody brilliant
A treat indeed...short, exciting, to the point, moving and euphoria inducing! I picked it up in Spring 2007 to give it a listen cos I thought the cover looked pretty cool. I was in for a very jolting but very nice experience I immediately purchased - I still listen to it a lot now...it never outstays its welcome! Buy now - if you don't you're silly and should have your toys taken away!
