Customer Reviews
Possibly the worst DS game, Nintendogs for cats this is not.
When a children's game is released, with that should come a responsibility - the responsibility to that child, who has asked a loving relative to buy them that game, or to the child who has saved up pocket money for weeks, for let's face it - something which is not cheap, DS or PS2/X-Box360 games are not at throwaway prices.
So my daughter for a birthday present was presented with "Catz". She played with it for all of 15 minutes, until it was put away for other games.
Anxious to test it out myself (Yes, I'm a big kid and a big gamer from my youth, ahhh Sonic the Hedgehog, those were the days), I put the cartridge into my own DS in anticipation.
Things didn't start off promising. On came the games "theme tune", without any exaggerating the most dreary downbeat and tuneless song I have ever heard on a game. This is no joke at all. Well things can only improve I thought with a smile as I started off the game....how wrong I was.
Not too bad at first really, you get to choose a kitten (They don't look realistic though - no-where near as "cuddlesome" as Nintendogs, and let's face it, that's what the target audience want). You can give them a tickle and hear them purr, but I soon realised that the only difference between them all was the look and sex of the kittens - they all had identical "personalities". Again, the obvious thing must be to compare this to the phenomenally and deservedly popular Nintendogs - and each dog there has a distinct personality.
Well, you've picked your kitten, you "go home" and there it is in a very basic graphically speaking room. It will explore, it will "meow" occasionally.
So then what do you do? Well, you can feed it - provides seconds of fun. You can throw it a toy, and it will behave just like a cat - play with it for a few seconds, then it's short attention span will take over and it will go back to staring around the room. You can also click to "petting mode" and give it a tickle for a few seconds.
After that, all you have to do is sit there, DS in hand and - well, watch the screen. The "highlight" of the game is that you will keep getting "virtual text messages" from a little telephone icon. These will be from the vet saying to take care of the cat, from virtual friends saying that they are so pleased that you have a cat, because they too have a cat - but the pièce de résistance surely has to be the texts from "Aunt Rose". She starts her texts by calling you "dear", and says that as you have a darling kitten, she will send an occasional allowance. I can just picture "Aunt Rose"
So what happens next? Well - that's it actually.
I wonder how many of this title is being sold off the back of the incredible "Nintendogs", with the inevitable disappointment for these young people.
These are not cheap medium; there are some fantastic games out there. Don't waste or let your children waste their money on this turkey.
Get them Nintendogs with a comparable myriad of activities and virtual animals with real personality. Get them one of the Mario games (You can't go wrong with these), get them Animal Crossing (I know adults addicted to this, a large number of us have exchanged "friend details" on an internet community site and visit each other's towns using the wifi worldwide facility. Like I said, we're big kids really).
Catz though, I wish I could say otherwise, but this is a truly awful embarrassment of a game.
From load up, if the theme tune isn't enough to send you to depression, well you haven't played the game yet.
Overpriced
My daughter got this game for her 9th birthday, she really enjoys playing with nintendogs and we thought she would get as much enjoyment out of this game. Wrong! You can virtually do nothing with it, the cats are cute and you can make a fuss of them, they will chase the toys, you can put food down but it is difficult to get them to eat it, all in all I feel it is overpriced for what it is, she now wants the Hamsterz game but I am reluctant for her to waste her birthday money on it incase it is the same, I would appreciate any feedback on this game.
Don't wast your money
Please do not waste your money on this terrible game. There is so little to do that it lost my interest within minutes. You choose a kitten to adopt and then it switches to a home screen. You are able to stroke the cat with the touch screen, feed and water him (altho its annoyinly difficult to get them to actually eat) and play with him with balls, mice etc. You dot get many items at the start, you have to buy them and more become available in the shops as the game goes on.
You can also decorate the room, this also costs money, and buy accesories (hats, slippers) for the cat. After about 5 mins of stroking the cat and throwing a ball around I was really just twiddling my thumbs. Evey now and then you get a message asking you to do a favour for a friend (usually take a photo of their cat) in exchange for money or, more often than not, a kitty card. Kitty cards are useless dull little things which just tell you a cat fact.
There doesnt seem to be any way of measuring your progress (nintendogs has trainer points which unlock new breeds etc. when you gain a certain amount but this game doesnt have anything like that)
Also the game doesnt look as good as nintendogs. Sure the kitty is cute but it could be so much better. I was expecting a lot mopre from this game, I can get hooked on nintendogs for hours or more wherase this game makes me want to take a nap. I wish I hadnt spent my hard earned cash on this pathetic game.
Perhaps I have missed something and theres a hole other side to this game that I havent found, even if there is, I'm not at all interested enough to find out
