Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
A lot of pop stars find it difficult to grow old gracefully, but not so Jarvis Cocker. His solo debut, Jarvis, find the former Pulp lyricist and frontman picking up more or where he left off with his former band, and the result is an album that befits a man in his thirties. In fairness, Cocker was always and astute and mature songwriter, with a keen gift for observation, so the transition to "serious" artist was never in any doubt. But still, it's a huge relief that Jarvis is so very, very good. He sings of love and loss, with perspective, knowledge, experience and, best of all, consummate ability. So "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time" is a pointed anti-marriage anthem, while "Fat Children" is a gloves-off attack on yob culture. Cocker is a great writer, and possesses the ability to make the listener laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time (check out the hidden track at the end for the finest example of this fact). Best of all, the quality of the lyrics is often matched by the strength of the tunes: "Black Magic" samples "Crimson & Clover" to fine effect, and "Heavy Weather" is downright anthemic. This is a superb album, one that should still be listened to for generations to come. --Ted Kord

best tracks
tonite and big julie.
but mainly big julie.
he loves his songs about beautiful, misunderstood teenage girls.
which should probably be disturbing but it works.
genius
Grow Up Jarvis!
First solo outing for the former Pulp frontman all seems rather derivative and lacking in individuality. It's by no means bad; there are lots of catchy melodies but given the high expectations; it all just seems rather average.
It is also extremely annoying (listen up everyone from Robbie (Gawd help us) to Tom Waits to have a long silence prior to the final track. There is a 25 minute gap between the end of Quantum Theory and the final track which starts at 29 minutes and 37 seconds. Why! It's also not worth the wait! - ooh rude words - naughty naughty! Jarvis you are such a baaaaaadaaaassss!
Time to root out my copy of His'n'Hers.
The Lanky One Is Back...
....I didn't realise that Jarvis Cocker had released a Solo album until I caught a feature on the South Bank Show. Some of the tracks sampled on the programme were brilliant and I obtained the album the next day.
The second and third tracks on the album are the strongest ('Don't Let Him Waste Your Time' and 'Black Magic'). It's a shame that these weren't given more airtime on radio as they are very strong tracks and I almost felt cheated at not discovering them months ago when they were first release!
The rest of the album doesn't seem as catchy, but the tracks are still good. You might not put them on repeat as much as 2 and 3, but they are still worth a listen.
If there's an "Essential Jarvis Cocker" album released in the future one day, you'll definitely see tracks from this album on there.
It was great to re-unite my ear with a fellow South-Yorkshireman and see that he has matured but not lost his edge.
