Pleasantly surprised...!
I was quite nervous, as I waited for my package to arrive... seeing the quality of the picture on televisions in Currys and John Lewis - they look pretty terrible, to be honest. Well, after plugging my new TV into my Humax PVR, SD Freeview looks amazing... a little blurry on occasion, especially with low-bitrate channels, but pretty excellent across the board. DVD and Archos picture is even better (through the RGB Scart) and my Wii (connected through component in 480p) looks AMAZING!! I can't wait to hook it up through HDMI for some REAL Hi-Def action!! PS3 perhaps?

If you're looking for something a bit better than some of the low-end models, and have the cash to spare, an LCD TV is a must! The prices will drop, however - this TV was £1299 in Feb '07... I don't want to KNOW what it is now! Look around, but keep a list of minimum specs in your mind at all times (2 HDMI, 5000:1 Contrast Ratio, 500 Brightness, included stand etc...)

AMAZING picture clarity and colour
OK .. so I was going to buy a Phillips ambi light thing .. and took along some video shot on my Canon XL H1 HD camcorder ... to play back through the component RGB inputs on the set. The Samsung just caught my eye .. playing back from the Samsung Blue Ray DVD player .. a Disney cartoon Ice Age type thing .. looked absolutely breathtakingly clear and sharp and colourful. SO .. please can I plug in my camcorder? Yes says the kind salesman .. WOW said I when I saw the results .. just simply wonderful ... and the same test on my original choice .. awful by comparison ... so I'm raiding the piggybank now ... I'm impressed also by the upscaling quality .. standard definition looked really good at normal viewing distance too!

Excellent
This is truly one hellfire television. Having owned an Acer 32 inch for 2 years I decided to take the plunge for a 40 inch with the capability of displaying 1080p. I am so glad I did. This Samsung unit has the same LCD display as a similar sized Sony unit. There are no dead pixels, the colours are vibrant and picture quality astounding. Not only that, it looks the business sitting on your television stand (or hanging off your wall even.)

I checked out 4 different 1080p 40 inch televisions that are avaiable at the moment, being Sony, Sharp, Samsung and Toshiba. I found the Sony excellent but expensive when compared with the Samusung; the Sharp had too few ports on the back for my needs - for example, component video would need to use a VGA convertor instead of having seperate plugs; the Toshiba turnned out to be unable to accept 1080p as an input. Instead it upscaled from 1080i to 1080p.

So the Samsung was an obvious choice. There are 2 HDMI ports on the rear, one of which I have Sky HD hooked up to - which incidentally broadcasts in 1080i - a component video input, a VGA input and 2 scart sockets, one being RGB. On the side is a multi card reader, s-video input and composite video input.

I hooked up my Xbox 360 to the component video, set it to 1080p and was amazed at the clarity, even when compared with my Acer 32 inch. The HD DVD player hooked up to my Xbox is able to broadcast in full 1080p as the component video input on the TV is capable of accepting 1080p, instead of 1080i like most LCD televisions. The card read allows you to view photographs onscreen - with slide show features - and play mp3 files via an onscreen media player. There is even a Pictbridge port to allow you to connect a compatible printer and print off any photos.

The list goes on with this TV. Bear in mind this is true 1080p. the resolution of the screen is 1920x1080. Hence it is future proof for up and coming technologies, e.g. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. When Sky transmits in 1080p in the next few years this TV can handle it.

The only slight downside to this television is the sound quality from the speakers. It is okay, but to be honest if you are going to buy a television like this, chances are you have a surround sound system already so will not need the speakers.

If you are after a 1080p Television you'd be mad to miss out on this one!
