Soulful Reflections That Transcend Strong!
Mary J. Blige is famous for a reason, she shares her life experiences through her music in a very soulful style unlike any other! Her voice is unique, the confident aura is fierce, and the production of the music is high quality. Enjoy an album with an array of songs all showcasing themes of all types to emphasize, learn about, or just enjoy! The Queen of Hip Hop Soul is here!
This Japan Import is worth the extra price for the collectors item worth, obi-strip, lyrical shiny booklet, and bonus material. The quality shows in the packaging and if you are a "true" fan then consider what you are looking for in a purchase. There are 18 tracks in total with the song "MJB Da MVP" Featuring 50 Cent, "As" featuring George Michael, "One" featuring U2, and "Ill Be There For You/You're All I Need To Get" By Razor Sharp Mix featuring Method Man.
This was my first Mary J. Blige album to hear and I was rather surprised. The songs have a magnet type effect for it's catchy hooks, excellent tempos that are mid, low, to some few up-tempo tracks. After this listening I bought many of her other albums but I find myself listening to this one just a bit more for its combination of songs that blend nicely. This album takes the tracks from many of her past albums to create a collection of hits to enjoy.
There are positive songs like, "You Know", life-experience and empowering tracks like, "No More Drama", as well as duets and featured artists like the song "911" duet with Wyclef and the track "King & Queen" duet with John Legend both truly classics!
While I can go expressing my thoughts on all the songs I will mention my top 3 favorites.
"No More Drama" is my favorite song of the entire album. It's the track that eases my thoughts. I like the way she sings softly and expresses how the drama has to end. There are sound clips of the soap opera Y&R in the background. Some lyrics, "No more drama in my life, no ones gonna make me hurt again... no more tears... I'm tired of crying every night... I don't ever want to hurt again." It's about letting go of all the pain and setting yourself free from the hurt. I can't begin to express how she sings, how the chorus steps in, and how it all just blends so unbelievable marking the message stronger and stronger thus making it a smashing masterpiece song.
"No One Will Do" is my second favorite. What a beautiful celebration of having the man of her dreams! It's uplifting, hopeful, energizing, and so romantic. I wonder if that was for her man... Some lyrics, "...when it comes to love he delivers/my personal UPS/Baby no one will do/And what they say don't even matter from what I know about you..." The singing is off the charts full of fiery singing, excellent vocal pitches, piano and beautiful sounds!
My third favorite and reason for my purchase is "MJB Da MVP" featuring 50 Cent for it's faster up-tempo beats. If the album would have had more songs with this sort of highly charged style then it would have definitely made a stronger mark for sure! The beats are catchy, infectious, and excellent! The hooks are sticky with much charismatic 50 Cent and funky blends of R&B, Hip-hop, Rap, and even dance hints. This song is a perfect 5 stars worth the entire buy alone!
Stand-out tracks are "911" featuring Wyclef, "Family Affair", and MJB DA MVP featuring 50 Cent to name just a few.
The listening experience is sometimes like being in New Orleans, Georgia, or the parts of the cities where down-to-earth moods are rampant. It's a genuine in touch feeling of the non-materialistic soul. The reflections are definitely soulfully sung and definitely on top!
If you are undecided of purchasing this album I recommend you to consider what kind of music you are looking for. It's not a dance CD, it's not a fast tempo Ciara album, or a silky soft cotton candy sound. Instead, it's a soulful piece that puts on the table the issues that many face, as well as the beauties of life, and love. She sounds like Tina Turner sometimes combined with Keyshia Cole and even Beyonce. Quite a unique style to embrace and enjoy! Be sure to get this before it sells out. This Japan Import is phenomenal, from my tastes. The catalog number is UICF-1083 2006.
Forget the worries that have gotten the best of you, boost your energies to soulful sounds, and get to know music with positive messages that are neither compromising to values nor degrading to women or sweet sensitive men. The musical feeling is that Mary J Blige is the Queen of Hip Hop Soul. While the music is not up-tempo all the way the overall effects are much to enjoy, please, and satisfy!
Could have been better!!!
I have loved MJB since What's The 411 and have got to admit that I was a little bit disappointed with this. The 4 new tracks are great and are the reson why I bought this album. But there is nothing from 'Share My World', unless you count 'Not Gonna Cry', which was on the 'Waiting To Exhale' soundtrack to begin with, 'Love & Life' (no big loss), and nothing from 'Mary'!! How the record company could not include 'More Than I Can Say' is beyond me. I have to agree with the other reviewers-this could have been a brilliant double album!!! Still, I have given it 4 stars as I love MJB!!!
One other point to bear in mind...
The previous two reviewers are fully right in suggesting that this album could have been so much better. But then whoever manages Mary's releases for the UK is hardly doing a great job - two consecutive years, great Mary singles have been released in the week before Christmas, and have been lost in the Christmas rush.
One point to add to the points made in the two previous reviews is that this album includes a solo version of One, although the packaging still bills it as a duet with U2. However, there is definitely no Bono on this version, and it is all the better for that. So, with the few great new tracks, and the Method Man duet, there are six good reasons to buy this compilation.
