Synopsis
Includes the following films based on Marvel superheroes: X-MEN, X-MEN 2, X-MEN - THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, DAREDEVIL, and FANTASTIC FOUR. In X-MEN, the titular characters are a team of mutant peacekeepers led by Professor Xavier assigned the task of protecting the human race against the sinister Magneto. In X-MEN 2, the group once again return to save the world from a group of mutant creatures. In the White House, teleporting blue mutant Nightcrawler menaces the president. Meanwhile in the Canadian Rockies, Wolverine searches for answers to his mysterious past at the top-secret facility where he received his metallic skeleton and claws. In X-MEN – THE LAST STAND, Worthington Laboratories--using a powerful mutant boy--develops a serum that eliminates the 'mutant X gene' permanently. This so-called 'cure' quickly divides the mutant community; Professor Xavier and his school are willing to give the government the benefit of the doubt but Magneto and his mutant Brotherhood see the serum as a vile threat to their way of life. They form an army of mutants and march on the fortified Worthington Laboratory located on Alcatraz Island. A much more dire threat appears in the form of the resurrected super-mutant Jean Grey, who has succumbed to her cataclysmic identity known as The Phoenix. In ELEKTRA, the titular character is resurrected after being killed by her former mentor and assigned the task, by The Order Of The Hand, of assassinating a man and his thirteen year old daughter. When she becomes friendly with her potential victims, however, she must do whatever it takes to defend them. In DAREDEVIL, Matthew Murdoch was blinded in an accident but being covered in a radioactive substance has had the ability to be completely aware of everything that is going on around him. He puts his special powers to good use as a crime fighter. In FANTASTIC FOUR, four astronauts embark on a space mission that goes wrong. The ship's owner - who later transforms into evil Doctor Doom - refuses to abort the mission during a solar storm, which electrifies the ship and its entire crew, causing radical changes to their DNA. Back on earth, the transformed 'heroes' adjust to their new powers, which are specific to their personalities. Mister Fantastic, who lacks assertion, has stretchy limbs of rubber. Invisible Woman, who loves Fantastic but thinks he can't see her for who she really is, does a disappearing act. The Human Torch, an immature guy who is brimming with energy, can burst into flames. And finally, The Thing, a great friend who is as solid as a rock, actually turns into one - and loses his wife due to his weighty disposition. Holing up in Fantastic's scientific lab where they run experiments on themselves in hopes of changing back to normal, the crew learns that Doctor Doom - who is so power hungry that he turns into metal and is able to conduct electrical currents - poses a serious threat. The heroes quickly master their abilities and channel their scientific smarts for one truly fantastic five-way face-off.

Just an amazing price and deal5
I bought my set from Direct Offers for 2.21 plus 1.24 postage via Amazon marketplace - it arrived shrink-wrapped.

So I've already seen X-men 1-3 at the cinema and looking forward to seeing them again. All watchable.

Just watched Fantastic 4 and it was a fun movie - not exactly challenging, but keeps going at a nice pace. Fun stuff.

My only reservation on buying this boxset was that I had read reviews saying that the director's cut of Daredevil is so much better than the original version - then when I open this set I find that it is the director's cut that has been included.

So, haven't watched this or Elektra yet, but already feel like I've got my money's worth and much more.

Marvel does not disappoint5
For the current price (£14.97) this DVD is an absolute steal and no, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you- this box-set really does contain SIX movies adapted from MARVEL comic books. This includes the entire X-Men trilogy, which retails at above the price of this set in most stores. Admittedly, not all of these films are as successful as some at bringing to life the original stories, but all manage to maintain the interest and to risk repeating myself- at this price who could argue with the contents?!

`X-Men' - [8/10] = sets a solid and stylish foundation for the series.

`X-2' - [10/10] = spellbinding from the outset with great human drama and mutant conflict, easily the best of the three films.

`X-Men The Last Stand' - [7/10] = A huge array of mutant abilities and beautiful set pieces can't quite disguise the cold emotional core of this story.

`Fantastic Four' - [7/10] = The quick cuts between the action can't compensate for the lacklustre story, but with the cool characters it's still an engaging film.

`Daredevil' - [5/10] = Aimed towards a more adult market with a dark tone, swearing and violence, `Daredevil' could have been unique, but the hammy acting at times makes it more laughable than frightening and generally it struggles to excite.

`Elektra' - [6/10] = An entertaining spin-off that's perhaps more authentic than the original, but the weak script meant it was doomed to fail.

The extra's are decent too. Despite these DVD's being slim-editions there are still special features, the menu's are of a high quality and even the discs aren't as basic as you'd expect. So no need to worry that this set was thrown together just to make the film companies an extra buck, it's really quite impressive.

P.S. If you haven't already make sure you keep watching right to the end of the credits on X-3 because at the very end there's a bonus scene that I only caught purely by chance the second time I viewed the film...and WOW is it a big scene! How such an important scene could be relegated to the very end of the movie where few people will ever see it is a mystery to me, but it's one that definitely can't be missed!
