Customer Reviews
Vastly improved on the original
Of all the five Genesis albums that have recently been re-mixed and re-released, this is probably the one that has gained the most from its new stereo mix (I have not heard the surround mix). The original recording and mix was done in a substandard studio (by professional standards), hence the poor tonal separation and cheap reverb soaking every instrument and vocal.
But stripped of these artefacts and treated to the latest digital reverbs and compressors, hearing the new version is like having the wax removed from your ears, it's all so clear!
'Wind' was always my favourite Genesis album, partly because I feel this is Tony Banks (my favourite composer of the band) at the top of his game, creating drama and beauty in his chord movements and arrangements, and fine contributions from the other members too.
But the songs always suffered from all that heavy reverb and a buried lead vocal, non more so than 'Eleventh Earl Of Marr'. No more though. As with 'Trick' and '...Three' but to an even greater extent, this mix is a massive improvement on the original.
The downside, as with all the five re-releases, is a slightly over-zealous compression applied to the whole mix (possibly added at mastering stage), making it sound a little squashed and suffocated. But since the improvement over the original is so great, this is easily tolerated.
Not much in the way of DVD extras to speak of, other than a fine section of the interview which spreads over all the discs. It is very enjoyable to watch, especially as the usually shy Tony Banks speaks eloquently and passionately about this, one of his favourite Genesis albums.
Buy it, and ditch your 'definitive remaster' edition.
Another stunning release.
At the time of its release in early 1977,Wind And Wuthering was a highly anticipated album from a band who were at the peak of their critical acclaim.By the end of that year Genesis, and many other major bands were facing a critical[if not commercial] battering, and this wider context has meant that Wind and Wuthering has often been viewed as a collection of songs completely at odds with its musical surroundings rather than the culmination of the bands, all too brief, four piece phase.
Musically, the album could not match the impact of its predicessor, but is a fine addition to the bands catalogue, and this reissue has been granted the same care and attention as A Trick Of The Tail, highlighting new depths to the complex arrangements.
Although i have only listened to the album in stereo, the sound quality is a vast improvement on the previous re master, and each track reveals new subtleties.
1.Eleventh Earl Of Mar.Perhaps the most striking thing about this song is the clarity of its introduction, the interplay between Tony Banks' keyboards, and Steve Hacketts wailing guitar are anthemic and full sounding. This has always seemed a little subdued on other releases. The other thing that strikes me on this song[and throughout this release],is how confident Phil Collins' vocals sound after a year on the road.
2.One For The Vine.I am biased as this is probably my favorite post Gabriel Genesis song, but again i have never heard this song sound as full and determined as it does on this reissue. The instrumental section has had new life breathed into it with the percussion driving the keyboards and other instruments with such clarity you could almost imagine the band are playing a private show just for you.
3.Your Own Special Way.Although i always felt this song plodded along,at least the instruments have a new clarity throughout.
4.Wot Gorilla. Here Genesis attempt something a little off the wall with the reprise of a part of One For The Vine, and although the track is lightweight, the drums, and synthesisers really sound full, and the chimes at the end resonate so much that you actually take notice of them!
5.All In A Mouses Night. This is a complex keyboard work, and it is on here more than any other track that the re mastering really shows up.The different Keyboard sounds are now clearly seperated, allowing the other instruments to support the music rather than interfere[i found the drums a little intrusive on the last version].The end section showcases both the keyboards and guitars quite brilliantly and the complex multi tracking really benefits from such attention to detail.
6.Blood On The Rooftops.Again its the introduction that really hits you.Steve Hacketts accoustic playing is now so detailed every note sounds unruffled and perfect[although, being a little pedantic,i am sure i can pick out a join of takes!].The mellotron makes a welcome return here in this thoroughly charming song.
7.Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers......In That Quiet Earth. The dreamy introdution to this instrumental track now sounds fully realised with keyboards, cymbals and guitar effects creating a dense atmosphere that literally flows around you.Once the Drums and bass hit you its like listening to a completely new version of a very familiar piece of music. However the heavier second part of the song only has a minor impact in comparison, although its clarity is welcome.
8.Afterglow.The final track on the album has always sounded full and impressive, but somehow this versionn showcases things i have not really noticed before[some important cymbal work, and some very clear multi layered guitar playing from both Hackett, and Mike Rutherford],this alone has made listening to the track so worthwhile.
Again the dvd has a reasonable interview with all four members, some footage from American tv which is most welcome[although the quality is far from perfect],and some Japanese footage that again lacks real visual quality. However, the band should be applauded for putting this footage out, because its relevance to their history is immense.
My only real complaint about this release and the Trick Of The Tail reissue is the lack of some good archive photos and sleevenotes[but i understand they can be found elsewhere].Believe me this is minor compared to the musical treats on these wonderful discs.
Problem with DVD Dolby Digital tracks or my DVD Player?????
Hello Friend of Genesis music,
excuse my English. All tracks on SACD/CD disc souds absolutely perfect and clear.BUT!!!!When I have listened 2. track in Dolby Digital on DVD disc I have heard such a awful noise just like from stratched vinyl LP from time 09:49 to 10:25 (elapsed time from start of Disc). The same noise appeared in tracks 7 and 9.I don't know it is a defect in manufacture or
problem of my DVD player???No problems with CD and DTS tracks. Is there anybody else which has the same problems?
