Good, so far, second time around
Sorry if this review is long winded, but I'm going to tell you everything about my buying experience!
Was a little bit nervous buying this after reading some of the other reviews, but it IS cheap.
1st delivery arrived and I started to copy files onto it. It kept losing power (the blue light went off) and disappearing from my computer after a few minutes of transfer, but switching it off and on again showed that files were copied across. If you've read the other reviews here you'll know about FAT32 and NTSF drive formats. I didn't realise that the 4GB limit is the TOTAL file size - not each individual file size. So I thought this may be the problem and reformatted to NTFS (right click, Format, Quick Format, no problems). Tried again, but same problem. Followed the Western Digital advice and contacted them, rather than returning the product to the 'shop' I bought it from. Have still not had any response from them and have in the meantime returned the drive to, and got a replacement from Amazon.
2nd Drive arrived. Formatted immediately to NTFS. Transferred 20-30GB of files to it no problem. I could see the files afterwards and managed to run (play) music files from it. If I'd had this drive first the rating would have been a 5.
So in short, Western Digital don't seem to have their support act together, some of their products appear to have faults, but hey, it's cheap, and it's easy to return stuff to Amazon and get a replacement!
Oh no!
How I wish i had actually read the reviews on this before buying it! It was so cheap i just snapped it up whoops! Like other reviewers this works fine for copying over a few files, but when making a full back up eg my documents the "copying" window suddenly freezes and then the drive is no longer recognisable. I turned it off for a while, tried it on my laptop with no luck so went to the website and found a tool the WD Diagnostics tools. i loaded it up thinking it will find the disk repaair or advise me if its overheated. Oh no!! The program was as good as the hard disk. It started to "scan for western drives..." and the dialogue box disappeared leaving me nothing!!!
scream.
backing up should be the thing to put your mind at ease not give you stress!!!!!
WD 250GB External drive
I have had it for over 2 months now ands I have found it to be good. Its solid build, the speed of transfer over usb 2.0 is pretty decent and it looks good (although the e confused me with evesham vale lol)Its smaller than I thought it will be when it came and its easily portable enough to carry around so its great option to have when you need extra HD space to supplement a laptop that has a small drive. It needs its own power supply which is a downer, but if you have lots of plugs that should'nt be a problem.
