Synopsis
Set under the grey skies of London, HUSTLE follows the exploits of five grifters (played by Adrian Lester, Jaime Murray, Robert Glenister, Marc Warren, and Robert Vaughn). This ambitious group of conmen (and woman) are no small-time crooks either; they've got much loftier goals which play out as elaborate schemes, trickery, and double-crossing. This release contains every episode from series 1-3.

The long arm of the con will draw you in...
I'd actually forgotten just how good this series was right from the very beginning. The debut season of `Hustle' is simply flawless television- exciting, wickedly funny at times and with stories so pitch-perfect and tightly scripted that as the tension is cranked-up to nail-biting proportions the eventual reveal is always electric. The grifting lingo and the references to the various types of con employed by our classy trickster outfit also go a long way to enriching the episodes and making the show feel that bit more authentic. As do the performances. Leader of the pack Mickey Stone adds class and credibility, Albert Stroller the debonair, deceptively senior citizen, seductive Stacie Monroe couldn't be sharper, Ash Morgan the brains behind the operation and cheeky Danny Blue...the heart and soul.
Particularly in the first season the personal lives of the main characters are explored quite a bit more, which I think adds a welcome dimension to the stories and when incorporated into the specific con of the week it actually improves the final surprise reveal e.g. Mickey's problematic love life, the grifting head-hunters after Danny's unique talents and Ash's bed-ridden ex-wife all go some way to humanising the show's brilliantly shallow format. The episode `A Touch of Class' (8/10) is probably my favourite from season one, more unpredictable than most with its exploration of the morality of the con, Tamzin Outhwaite's wickedly deceitful performance and an unexpected chink in the armour of Mickey Stone.
Season two is in real contrast to the first- darker, even slicker, more morally ambiguous and yet still the quality of the stories is just as high. The episode `Confessions' (8/10) probably epitomises this season- it's absolutely ruthless and is quite morally ambiguous, as Danny assumes the identity of a corrupt and violent restaurant owners' long lost son. The ending is not just the usual unpredicted tying together of all the loose ends either, it's actually quite moving.
Season three has some absolutely cracking stories, incredibly well put together and I find it really difficult to pick a favourite. It's definitely a very close thing between `Albert's Challenge' (9/10), which sees Mickey and Danny chucked out of a van naked in the middle of London and competing for something even more vital to a grifter than money- their honour. It's a totally original and well scripted episode of television. My other strong contender is `A Bollywood Dream' (9/10), which again incorporates more of a human element as well as the group's shallow pursuit of cash. Silas Carson's performance as the latest mark is brilliant and whoever could have imagined an episode of Hustle Bollywood style?! It's genius!
Puts a smile on your face.
Much has been said elsewhere of the excellent series that is Hustle. Yes, the script, acting and plotting is all first rate. But what this series does, which is pretty rare these days, is put a great big smile on your face as you watch it. The program is a pure joy and deserves its 5 stars. I just hope the BBC pull the plug before it fades.
