Something different, for a change
I first heard Tokyo Moon and was absolutely blown apart. I thought Windmill must have been American, due to the completely different sound that they had created, and I was astounded to find out they were from England! Where we have to put up with a repeat of the Arctic Monkeys in every "new" band we hear on the radio, hearing Windmill is a refreshing change.
The stand out songs on the album I would say are: Tokyo Moon, Flourescent Lights, The Planning Stopped, Asthmatic, Plasticine Plugs and Fit. I'm not saying that the other songs on the album are just filler, in fact they create the glue that makes this whole album extremely accessible.
A quick point to round up my review, is Matthew Dillon's voice. It's very interesting to listen to and suits the music and dynamics of the songs.
A top class album, I hope it does well and pushes Windmill onto greater success!
Find of the Year (to date)
Hadn't heard of Windmill until it was flagged up as an Amazon recommendation. Sometimes they come good so did a search to see what was on Youtube and stumbled across Tokyo Moon. I realised the tune was banging away at the back of my head for several days afterwards, which is always a good sign so took the plunge and handed over my sterling for this album. Money well spent, not a weak track on it, original tunes, lyrics, and dare I mention it, vocals. You have to take time with it, another good sign, but this is an excellent debut by any standards.
Best and most original CD of 2008 so far.
Idiosyncratic, quirky and utterly beguiling. Once you get past Matt's unique vocals you will fall deeply and completely in love with the fabulous tunes and heartfelt nature of every song. Sometime joyous at other times heartbreaking. Something about this album just draws you in a sits like an immovable object deep in your brain. These song will definately be my soundtrack for the summer of 2008.
