Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
A Beautiful Lie, the second studio album from 30 Seconds To Mars, was recorded in five different countries over a period of three years, in order to accommodate vocalist/guitarist Jared Leto's acting career. Yet the album is anything but disjointed. On the contrary, it's more consistent than its predecessor, 30 Seconds To Mars, as well as more confident, more personal (lyrically), and generally more mature. True, A Beautiful Lie relies heavily on Leto's dynamic vocals to lead the way. But lead single, "Attack," illustrates the more stripped down, radio-friendly sound of the band perfectly - as do tracks "The Kill," "Was it a Dream" and "From Yesterday". The band conjure up some slower, more kaleidoscopic moments ("A Modern Myth," for example), but A Beautiful Lie is largely a punchy project with a frisky mid-tempo pace and an engagingly sonorous aura. The only criticism would be the choice of Bjork’s "Hunter" as a song to cover: 30 Seconds To Mars are very far from doing the song - or themselves - justice here. However, the newly enhanced version of the album, with its re-recording of the "The Kill" and DVD featuring live performances and MTV2 moments, help make up for any occasional blips. --Danny McKenna

CD Description
Sophomore album from stadium-sized, emo-tinted US radio rockers fronted by actor Jared Leto comes more than four years after their eponymous debut. In much the same vein as the first, this album is full of earnest, angsty, vaguely metallicyet melodic songs with high production values, heavily inspired by mainstream mid-90s alt-rock. Includes the singles 'Attack' and 'The Kill'.

Simply Amazing Album5
I bought this after a few friends recomended it. Being into all forms of guitar music from emo-pop through to Death Metal I listened to it with an open mind and without even knowing who the lead singer was.

Quite simply first listen I was amazed at the quality and talent shown here. Jareds voice is simply awesome and the songs are excellently written and polished right the way through.

Starting with "Attack" a song that just reeks power and get's you really excited straight away. Then the album does soften up a bit throughout the next couple of tracks with "The Kill" being a really (I hate this tag.) EMO song but you realise then just how awesome this guys voice is and that's not going onto the tunes themselves which are awesome. Then after a couple of great 'filler' tracks you get "From Yesterday" Quite possibly already one of my favourite songs of all time. His voice throughout the song is amazing, from the soft melodic verses to the screaming choruses where he really does seem to sing his heart out and after a few listens you will probably do so to. A song that really lifts your spirits and get's your heart and soul going.

The album ends on a softer note and as soon as the last note is rung you want to hit the repeat button to go through it all again.

So I would recommend anyone who likes rock music buys this album, yes in parts it's EMO but don't let that hinder you. I promise, if you like soaring vocals, well written songs and music that really makes you feel what the singer seems to be, you won't go wrong with this album.

30 seconds and your hooked!4
So much has been written about the 'Hollywood star' connection so lets dispence with all that crap and focus on the band and music. I've been lucky enough to have been listening to this album for over a year having bought it in America the day it came out, and what a cracker it is. Kicking off with Attack this draws you in with some amazing vocals and a fantastic driving song(just watch your speed). Not wanting to really use the Emo tag this album cannot get more emotional if it tried on tracks The kill and From yesterday with Jared screaming his lungs dry. I found the best way to describe them was if you were to put U2, Depeche Mode, and Motorhead in a room to duke it out the surviving members would form 30 Seconds to mars. Great album hope the hype does not break them up, an album that will certainly help you work, rest and play.

30 SECONDS TO MARS - A BEAUTIFUL LIE5
Having put up with Radio 1 and listening to 'The Kill' overplayed, trying to get used to it after the very fantastic 'Biffy Clyro-Puzzle'(album of the year, in my opinion) the album would appear to be impossible to match. 'A Beautiful Lie' became an absolute joy and grows on me each time on playing(listen to the reviews so far), it is a real grower after a couple of listens. Please, please buy and listen more than once (it will be your favourite album at one stage in your life)!
