Manufacturer's Description

Easy Migration to Windows 7

Anyone wishing to upgrade to the new Windows 7 operating system will face a difficult and time-consuming task requiring them to copy all data to a safe location, install Windows 7, and then reinstall all their applications and restore their data by hand, with potential for data and applications to be lost.

Laplink has a better solution. It’s fast, simple, and doesn’t require copying any data to and from an external drive.

Using PCmover, Laplink’s award-winning and best-selling migration software, any user can upgrade from Windows XP or Vista directly to Windows 7 with just a few simple steps:

1. Install PCmover on the Windows XP or Vista computer to be upgraded.
2. Run PCmover and select the upgrade option.
3. Install Windows 7, selecting the “do not reformat” option.
4.Install and run PCmover which will automatically restore all applications, files, and settings.

For those users who desire to reformat their hard drive when upgrading, PCmover also supports this option by automatically transferring data to and from external media such as a USB hard drive.

PCmover isn’t limited to in-place upgrades for Windows 7, it also supports users moving from any version of Windows (95 or later) to Windows 7 whether on the same hardware or migrating to a new PC.

Complete migration - Move all your files, settings, and programs from the old to the new PC, without worrying that key registry settings or shared files will get left behind. PCmover is the ONLY migration utility for Windows that moves programs, files, and settings from your old PC to your new PC – or performs an in-place upgrade regardless of operating system.

The USB 2.0 cable supplied includes a chipset that allows for simultaneous, bi-directional flow of information between PCs. This allows for both PCs to communicate and transfer information more quickly.

Transfer from an old OS to new - PC Mover will transfer files, settings and programs from PCs with operating systems dating back from Windows 95 right up to Windows 7

File & Folder Selectivity- You decide which files and folders belong on your new PC – or copy all of them.

Transfer Applications - Transfer all or only selected applications to your new PC.

Easy-to-Use Wizard Interface - Click through a simple wizard to set up the move. In just a few minutes, PCmover will start to transfer your programs, files, and settings in one easy step.

No overwriting - PCmover will not overwrite any pre-installed software on your new PC, or alter your old PC in any way.

Multiple transfer options - Choose from a parallel cable, USB 1.1, USB 2.0, or for the fastest migrations, use a wired/wireless network to perform the migration. You can even use removable media such as a CD-R or DVD-R.

Migrate multiple users in a single migration - Most software requires you to perform two separate migrations for two separate users - not PCmover! Save time by automatically migrating all XP users and their configurations from an old PC to a new PC in a single migration

Undo feature - Reverse a migration at any time with PCmover's easy "undo" feature

Customer Reviews

Did exactly what it promised on the box.5
I read the review on this site and a number of other adverse reviews and thought long and hard about using this. However, one technical review said that so long as you are careful to follow the instructions to the letter, it works fine.

I was transferring from an XP laptop to Vista.

I started by doing a thorough clean up of the XP computer. I chucked out all the Apps I never use and ran a cleanup and a virus check on all the rest. I used Quick Clean to get rid of all excess junk, leftovers, double entries etc. I also ran a registry clean up. When I was sure that I had done all that I could, I gave the whole machine an exhaustive defrag with a specialist programme.

Next, I did the same for the Vista Computer. As it was almost straight out of the box, this only took very little time.

The next thing - and according to what I read - the most important thing was to disable all background running applications on both computers, paying particular attention to virus programs and firewalls. Also, I was told, it was vital to disable screensavers and power 'time-outs' etc. This I did. Only then did I load up the software as instructed on both machines, connect the USB 2.0 cable and left the machines to 'chat to each other' for three and a half hours.

I was fully expecting at least one or two problems BUT NO. Three and a half hours later, everything was safely transferred (or rather copied) from one machine to the other. What had taken a week when I traded up a few years back from Windows 98 to XP took only half a Saturday to complete and three hours of that was spent watching the Test Match on TV while the actual transfer happened. What a fantastic product! I have nothing but praise for it.

Beware! Not compatible with 64-bit version of Vista1
It does not work with the 64-bit version of Vista. It does not clearly state this either on the Amazon description nor on the product box itself. Since complaining to the makers Laplink, I see they have now added this warning on their own website.

Saved a lot of time and trouble5
We were moving from an XP box to a new Vista PC. The instructions were clear and concise. The limitations of the product are also clearly stated - you may need to reactivate some licence keys on the new box, and don't expect device drivers to come over.

Bearing these limitations in mind, I will state that the programme did what is said on the tin for us - user accounts, passwords, personal profiles, programmes, document folders and structures, all came across neatly, including desktop wallpapers! We are reactivating licence keys as necessary, this is not too much trouble, and have installed printers, digicams etc on the new machine.

It took about 4 hours in total including the installation process - about 3h30 to transfer about 19GB of data, via the silver-plated LapLink cable supplied in the box.

All in all, this will have save us many hours of manually copying files and reinstalling programmes. Recommended.
