Manufacturer's Description

Complete migration to a new windows vista PC

Now you can easily transfer all your applications, files and settings to your new Vista PC in one simple process.

USB 2.0 cable The USB 2.0 cable includes a chipset that allows for simultaneous, bi-directional flow of information between PCs. This allows for both PCs to communicate and transfer information more quickly.

Complete migration Move all your files, settings, and programs from the old to the new PC, without worrying that key registry settings or shared files will get left behind.

Transfer from an old OS to new PC Mover will transfer files, settings and programs from PCs with operating systems dating back from Windows 95 right up to windows Vista

No overwriting PCmover will not overwrite any pre-installed software on your new PC, or alter your old PC in any way

Multiple transfer options - Choose from a parallel cable, USB 1.1, USB 2.0, or for the fastest migrations, use a wired/wireless network to perform the migration. You can even use removable media such as a CD-R or DVD-R.

Migrate multiple users in a single migration - Most software requires you to perform two separate migrations for two separate users - not PCmover! Save time by automatically migrating all XP users and their configurations from an old PC to a new PC in a single migration

Undo feature - Reverse a migration at any time with PCmover's easy "undo"

Did exactly what it promised on the box.5
I read the review on this site and a number of other adverse reviews and thought long and hard about using this. However, one technical review said that so long as you are careful to follow the instructions to the letter, it works fine.

I was transferring from an XP laptop to Vista.

I started by doing a thorough clean up of the XP computer. I chucked out all the Apps I never use and ran a cleanup and a virus check on all the rest. I used Quick Clean to get rid of all excess junk, leftovers, double entries etc. I also ran a registry clean up. When I was sure that I had done all that I could, I gave the whole machine an exhaustive defrag with a specialist programme.

Next, I did the same for the Vista Computer. As it was almost straight out of the box, this only took very little time.

The next thing - and according to what I read - the most important thing was to disable all background running applications on both computers, paying particular attention to virus programs and firewalls. Also, I was told, it was vital to disable screensavers and power 'time-outs' etc. This I did. Only then did I load up the software as instructed on both machines, connect the USB 2.0 cable and left the machines to 'chat to each other' for three and a half hours.

I was fully expecting at least one or two problems BUT NO. Three and a half hours later, everything was safely transferred (or rather copied) from one machine to the other. What had taken a week when I traded up a few years back from Windows 98 to XP took only half a Saturday to complete and three hours of that was spent watching the Test Match on TV while the actual transfer happened. What a fantastic product! I have nothing but praise for it.

Beware! Not compatible with 64-bit version of Vista1
It does not work with the 64-bit version of Vista. It does not clearly state this either on the Amazon description nor on the product box itself. Since complaining to the makers Laplink, I see they have now added this warning on their own website.

    Big disappointment2
I've used Laplink back since the days of Laplink 3 and decided this would be a great way to save time migrating info over.

The software lacked any real ability to customise what was copied over so if your existing machine is configured perfectly and you want to move all apps over great.

If however you want to take the opportunity to really move forward use standard laplink to move over useful folders such as My Documents, Music, etc and take the time to install apps as new. I'd also spend the time looking at Vista as I found that some of the built in extras do away with the need for extra system tools I'd previously install in XP.
