Editorial Reviews

CD Description
With 2007's MYTH TAKES, the Brooklyn-based dance-punk octetChk Chk Chk presents an outing that's notably more accessible and immediately engaging that its predecessors. Not only have frontman Nic Offer and company reined in the excessive swearing (see the expletive-laden LOUDEN UP NOW), they have imbued their brand of robot rock with added elasticity and energy, as best revealed on the fast-paced opening title track, which coasts along on a twangy surf/spaghetti Western vibe, and the pulsing, club-ready "Heart of Hearts." However, those worried that the ensemble has dulled its mischievous edge will be reassured by the searing, frenetic "All My HeroesAre Weirdos" and the atmospheric, groove-steeped "Bend OverBeethoven," two tunes that prove that Chk Chk Chk's blatantly quirky and experimental side has been toned down, but notforgotten. For those intrigued by Chk Chk Chk, but put off by the band's uber-hipster archness, MYTH TAKES may be the point where they join in the party.

Customer Reviews

Oh! How I despair of people reviewing records they've not heard!5
PLease ignore the review at the bottom.

!!! are a dubby funk rock band. They're not experimental, they're not wierd; they're a good time party band. The music has the kind of raw energy you might expect from a bunch of ex-punks (proper d.i.y. underground punks) who decided to make party music instead.

Vis-a-vis supporting Red Hot Chilli Peppers; it should be noted that !!! are a band for people who like BloodSugarSexMagik's energised funk-rock, not those who adore Californication's warm pop (and the swearing? They have one song, from the album 'Louden Up Now', with lots of swearing - they make a joke out of the ridiculous, over-the-top swearing - they're not snotty, swearing oiks)

I've only heard other people's copies a few times so i don't feel qualified to review tracks fully; but what i heard was very good.

Return to their funky best4
!!! celebrate all that is good with the sparse, funky sound of the Chili peppers and more relevantly A Certain Ratio. The shimmering guitar sound reverberates behind the chugging funkiness of most of the tunes on this new record. Whilst it will hardly break them into the big time, this is a record that does deserve to sell well in the world of soft industrial funk.

I love that they have three drummers!3
Ok they really only have three people drumming occasionally, and when they do it is great. Its like those really good gigs where the main band gets the support act(s) up to play all manner of adjunct instruments and really kick of a party for the encore. If you like a dance as well as a mosh, then !!! is the best around for this. This album is not as good as their live performances but it is more than worth a listen.
