So here we have 'Return of the Mac', the new Prodigy mix CD produced entirely by long-time cohort The Alchemist. It's been close to 7 years since the street classic 'H.N.I.C' dropped, and after three mediocre Mobb Deep albums Prodigy has a lot to answer for. Does he succeed? For the most part yes.
We all know Prodigy hasn't been the same since 'Infamy' dropped, so if you're looking for the emcee who once claimed he would "rock you in your face" and "stab your brain with your nosebone" you'll be disappointed. But without a doubt, P's flow sounds rejuvenated and his lyrical output is better than it has been for the past few years.
Now to The Alchemist's contribution. After DJ Premier and RZA hit their peak, I felt ALC filled their void for a while, but after hearing his last two mixtapes 'Chemistry Files' and 'No Days Off', I felt like he was beginning to slip too. But I can honestly say that after listening to this my faith has been fully restored in him. 'Return of the Mac' was inspired by old Blaxploitation films, so here you will find many of the tracks sample old soul records by the likes of James Brown, Barry White and Rita Wright. It's a shift in gears for both Prodigy and Alchemist, as both are known for a darker sound, but I feel at the end of the day it can be considered a solid victory. I have no doubt that by the end of the year this will be remembered as one of the better hip-hop albums of '07.
H.N.I.C 2 coming August.
Prodigy Of MOBB DEEP....
Some people are clearly confused of who Prodigy is... Prodigy is of course one half of the rap duo The Infamous Mobb Deep, and not Liam Howlett's Prodigy! So for you people who are slagging off someone your not really familiar with, your foolish and make yourselfs sound stupid. Prodigy has been an underground legend in the hip hop world with his partner Havoc for over 15 years now, creating critically acclaimed albums such as "The Infamous", "Hell On Earth", "Murda Muzik", "Infamy" and his last solo effort "H.N.I.C" which won him a lrycist of the year award with the Source magazine.
Anyway back to the point. After hearing their latest album "Blood Money" i thought the once gritty street life telling mc that was once one of the most vicious lyrically potent rappers, had fallen off big time. But after hearing "Return Of The Mac" i can still see there is some of this rapper still remaining in Prodigy. Espicially on tracks "New York (...)", "7th Heaven", "Bang On 'Em", the soulful "Stuck On You" and "Mac 10 Handle" of which the video is one of the most original i've ever seen (check it out!!!). Alchemist has produced the entire album which sounds great with samples your sure to recognise from all parts of the music and even the film world creating a kind of back to the early 90's rap music world. Which c'mon lets face it was when hip hop was at its best!
All in all i think Prodigy has made a good album here, and could go down as another classic he helped to create from back in his past. Like his last solo album and previous Mobb Deep albums. Although he might not be the lrycist from the darkside he once was. He's well on the way to putting right the mistakes he made with "Blood Money" and getting back on track!
Return of the P
Real return to form from one half of the M.O.B.B. who's received his fair share of criticism for a downturn of quality in recent years. Mack is Back, Return of the Mac, 7th Heaven are all quality, but even better are Mac 10 Handle (track that conveys a life of grime 'I sit alone in my dirty-ass room staring at candles'), Take it To the Top, and Stuck on You (which has, now we're in December got my vote for best hip-hop track of the year). The whole album is produced by Alchemist who's worked his way mostly via Mobb Deep to becoming one of the top 5 producers in the genre.
Prodigy refers to this CD as a mixtape in some of the songs but it doesn't have the feel of one. If as he says, the forthcoming album's going to be better, that's gonna be something to own.
