A non technical appraisial.............
I did not buy the box set, but instead selected favourite albums from this era, namely; Trick Of The Tail, Wind And Wuthering and Duke.
If any of the Gabriel era albums would have been available in a similar format, then no doubting I would have bought the set.
Basically, I played them on standard CD and DVD players, as I am sure many people would do or have done, rather than any hi-tech equipment: SACD or DVD audio with all the trimmings.
The sound is 'bright' but a lot more punchier; one could say cleaner, but I think improved clarity of sound is a better description; some of the instruments and vocals almost jump out at you.
All in all an excellent, if slightly flawed, result.
The missing albums ??
I was browsing threw Amazon when I came upon the two box sets and brought them with out hesitation, noting that they where SACD + DVDs when I got them and played them I was not disappointed excellent, excellent.
What I was disappointed about was all the missing albums? The Lamb, The knife Trespass, Nursery Crime, Foxtrot and Selling England.
The music industry is always pledging poverty and seeing its CD sails dropping like a stone with out admitting the main problem over the years has been over pricing however then you get a excellent box set like this with albums missing? If the band" Yes" can pull together a complete album re-mastered set with all the changes in there line up over the years why could not Genesis?
For me Foxtrot and Nursery Crime where and are the best two albums by far to come out of Genesis. And to not have them in this box set is like leaving Dark side of the Moon is for Pink Floyd box set!!

Well worth a flutter
Gabblerachet is right. No need to write a critique about every album. These albums were released as I was doing my A-Levels through to graduation (yes children, THAT OLD and it did take a long time). The albums are so different and represent such a variety of moods and styles, not all of which are brilliant (Whodunnit still nauseates me!), that it's worth buying this set just to witness the transition. Most Genesis fans will welcome the chance to refresh the sound on cds which were originally released with awful sound transfer from the vinyl (albums which stated on the back ' Not digitaly (sic) recorded'. The double disc presentation is slightly hyperbolic but it's nice to be able to watch the dvds within the framework of the album you're listening to. And the extra discs are lovely.
What we now really need is the Gabriel-style albums. When will we finally get the Lamb, Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England. I'd pay £100 for that little lot!!!
