Minder
The entire series represents a wonderful commentary on 1980's Britian from the the free marketeteering Arthur to the social conscience of Terry McCann. The humour is timeless, the characters broad ranging and sometimes eccentric and the juxtaposition between law and order and a nice little earner is central to every mouth watering epidsode. A truly brilliant series which must hve one star deducted, because as a hearing impaired person there are no sub-titles
A mediocre introduction to an excellent TV series
As a Minder fan since its first airing on TV twenty eight years or so ago I was really looking forwarded to ploughing through it all again. After this series I was left a little disappointed. It is very much a warm up, introducing and getting to know the characters and giving their relationships a chance to develop. Many episodes, whilst still watchable, left me a little empty and they did feel very dated. However, things do improve as you work your way through and certainly subsequent series, especially 3-5, are excellent. Series 1 and 2 are more serious than latter ones though they do show glimmers of the more comedic side to come.
In summary, this is a must watch and a rite of passage to the later episodes. Do not let the three star rating put you off, it's really a reflection of how good the later 5* series are.
Minder Is In A Class Of It's Own
What ever were ITV thinking when they tried a remake of MINDER on channel 5. I saw the first one to see how it came across, and it didn't. There is,and always will be only one MINDER. Even George Cole & Dennis Waterman refused to back it,and I don't blame them. The original MINDER will always be to me,-The best thing ever to hit the TV screen-. Anyone trying to replace George Cole & Dennis Waterman could spend there whole life and not do it. I have all the episodes under lock & key.
You can't go wrong with any MINDER DVD. But I would say get the lot. It's a thing that will go on through history. Way high above the -Rubbish - we see today.
The very first one was shot in Rohampton and used a launderette. All that took place 30 years ago. Well the launderette is still here, and thankfully,so is MINDER.
