Amazon.co.uk Review
Anyone looking for any kind of realistic consideration of the problem of climate change is in completely the wrong place with The Day After Tomorrow. Employing scientific conventions and explanations that you could rightly describe as ‘ropey’, it nonetheless does manage to deliver an entertaining slice of science fiction, and some high concept blockbuster fun.
Directed by Roland Emmerich, whose previous examples of spectacle cinema include Independence Day and Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow sees a new ice age dawning on the Earth, and in double quick time too. Caught in the midst of it all are Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid, as a separated son and father, with the former in New York and the latter in Washington. Quaid’s climatologist sets off to find and rescue his offspring, across a desperate ice-laden wasteland replete with umpteen threats along the way.
Taken as a slice of easy blockbuster entertainment, it’s hard not to glean some enjoyment out of The Day After Tomorrow. You may sit there trying to work out why some things freeze and some things don’t, but you can’t help but marvel at the terrific special effects, and the breezy pace of it all. In high definition, as you’d hope and expect, it all looks even better, and gives a meaty workout for any 1080p-ready display. Just don’t take it all that seriously… --Jon Foster
Synopsis
With THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, director Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA) trades evil aliens and radioactive lizards in for some seriously bad weather. When a radical change in the temperature of the world's oceans causes deadly storms and sets a new Ice Age in motion, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) must race from Washington D.C. to save his son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), in the subzero climes of New York City. Elsewhere, tornadoes and hail menace the globe, leading to international disasters on an extraordinary level. Emmerich, who has proven to be a master of big-budget cinematic destruction on numerous occasions, aims to outdo himself with THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. Here entire cities are ripped apart, flooded, and/or frozen, adding up to one of the biggest disaster movies ever filmed. Although astonishingly rendered special effects rule the movie, adept actors such as Quaid and Gyllenhaal (along with Sela Ward, Ian Holm, Emmy Rossum, and others) turn in solid performances that help to balance out the meteorological mayhem. Surprisingly, Emmerich also uses the film as a vehicle for clever moments of social and political commentary, making THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW admirably smarter and considerably more entertaining than typical Hollywood blockbusters.
Customer Reviews
Great Movie , Great Transfer
Imported from the states - I do like this movie although I know there have been alot of end of the world type movies, this one is one of my fav's.
HD Picture 5/5
HD Sound 5/5
Extras 0/5
A definate step up for the DVD version, would recommend this as its a great transfer, shame that Fox doesnt seem to be doing any extras on any of their Blu Ray disc's which does let the side considering the DVD has plenty!
