With the Hitman series already well established, Danish developer Io Interactive are not exactly masters of the family friendly game. This latest effort is their most violent and shocking yet, as you take control of reluctant mercenary Kane and his schizophrenic partner Lynch. Neither character likes the other but for the purposes of the story they have to work together in a series of violent third person shoot outs. By default you control Kane, with the computer or another player taking on the role of Lynch. As the game progress you will also be able to recruit a team of up to eight mercenaries, with your reputation determining the quality of the personnel applying for the job. Ordering your squad around is easy enough but since any of them, particularly Lynch, can have completely different objectives to you, they won’t always take orders – particularly if they’ve taken a dislike to you already - which is a real problem when you want them to administer some first aid.
Although it is much more action packed than the Hitman games, there are obviously similarities between the two games, with highly interactive environments and multiple ways to approach any problem. One particular highlight already demonstrated involves a kidnapping at a rave with Kane & Lynch firing into the air to disperse a large crowd of dancers before engaging in a brutal gun battle with security guards, as the sound and music system continues to flash and blare. If the rest of the game is just as inventive with its scenarios then Io may well keep Kane and Lynch alive for a little longer.

A game where the action serves a story
This is a good game. There may be nothing terribly new in the set up (bank robberies, underworld characters, twists aplenty) but that's how genre entertainment works - the enjoyment of spending time in a world we are familiar with. And this is a game that is fully aware of its generic antecedents. At times this feels like Heat, then Collateral, then Reservoir Dogs. The central characters are different though. Flawed, pyschotic, balding - these are not the run of the mill game heroes. And the game is all the better because of it. One of the true pleasures of the game is learning more about them.
A lot of the negative comments are to do with pacing. This is not a blazing action game. Rather, the action serves the story. However, the action is great: intense, thrilling, varied and immersive. The control system has also received a lot of criticism and I can't really understand why. It is intuitive and responsive. The targeting is not absolutely precise, more of a guide, and in a game aiming for a more realistic approach, this works very well. Similarly the effectiveness of the enemy is a good thing - you really feel that Kane and Lynch are vulnerable, meaning you take your time, plan ahead. The graphics are good and the whole thing has a style that feels right. Highly recommended.
One of a kind
Confused as to whether to get this game? too many conflicting reviews?
Ask yourself, do you like interesting, twisted characters and a great plot? do you like an element of strategy and team leadership in your games, do you like a realistic aiming system, (does anyone really think firing a real gun and hitting the target is as easy as it is in a video game? come on!)
I despair of people who bleat and complain about quality games such as this, either you 'get' just what this game is offering you or you don't, if you do then it will offer you one of the best gaming experiences you could hope for, games like this are special and only come along every once in a while, IO Interactive created Hitman, and they have another gem on their hands with Kane and Lynch, and I think they know it as they are already working on the sequel, it wouldn't surprise me if the Kane and Lynch series becomes a movie one day just as Hitman did, it would certainly make the transition better than Hitman, Lynch; a self medicating schizophrenic murdered his wife and didn't even know it, but we won't hold that against him, he is an absolute scream at times the way he behaves, his rantings and paranoid comments cracked me up time and time again in this game, he just can't help himself, when Kane says 'keep calm' the reply is 'I am calm, are you saying I'm not calm?' or was that Liam Gallagher, I forget.
Either way, I hope you enjoy this gaming gem.
Back to basics shooter...shines in Co-op!!
This game is absolutely awesome, I dont understand the negative reviews its recieving, I love this game, it doesn't bring anything new to the 3rd person shooter genre, it's just oldskool shooting fun (which I always love).
Playing this singer player is great (but can be frustrating, as your computer controlled partner 'Lynch' does eff all to help), this is why the game seriously comes into its own in co-op mode, Player 1 controls Kane and Player 2 controls Lynch.
Shotting up some cops, prison gaurds and some hostages with a friend by your side watching your back is utterly addictive and will keep you hooked.
The gameplay is solid and the enemy AI is unrelenting especially on the harder difficulties, the story is good and helps drive the game, the voice acting is spot on, and the graphics are beautiful and fit the overall feel of the game.
The cover system works well, sneaky greande kills are always satisfying and the close quater kills never get old.
Team work in co-op is key on harder difficulties to get through the relentless levels.
This game is worth picking up if you love oldskool shooting fun, but if you are like me and are looking for that addictive co-op shooter (before 'Army of Two' is released) give 'Lynch & Kane' a spin.
It will not dissapoint.
