Red Gone Average
Redman back with his first studio album in 6 years. For a comeback album I think he'd come back with a better effort than this. It's not that bad, but a bit of trimming wouldn't have gone amiss. Tracks like Fire, Bak Inda Buildin, Gimmie One, How U Like Dat, Freestyle Freestyle, Wutchoogonnado, Dis Iz Brick, Rite Now, Pimp Nutz, Hold Dis Blaow, Get 'Em, Merry Jane, Gilla House Check, the first part of Sooperman Luva and Suicide are all what I'd call good (and Mr Ice Cream Man is a classic - no-one does skits like Red) but tracks like the Timbaland collabo Put It Down are boring, F*** Ur Opinion isn't great, Sumtn 4 Urrbody is pretty poor and a skipper, Walk In Gutta as Def Squad disappoints (Erick Sermon should stop using those Biz Markie samples which are sounding a bit dated and tired now and Keith Murray's rap is a mess) & Blow Treez - Redman's joint with Method is bad (not meaning good) - a mile away from their duets on 'Blackout'.
Far better are his Ill at Will mixtapes which he put out during his hiatus - would recommend buying those and not this.
Red Gone Wack!!!
As a long time Redman fan, I was pretty disappointed when I came across this album in my local record store. The cover/inlay artwork (compared with previous efforts) did not signal the arrival of a half decent album. Firstly, the album is TOO LONG by far and not arranged properly, he should have ditched the skits/pointless filler and focused on his best material. Secondly, and more importantly, Red still has the skills, but it's going to waste with poor production, lack of fresh ideas (Soopaman Luva 6 !!!) and a overly commercial sound. I wouldn't recommend buying this - Red needs to re-discover his hardcore sound (i.e. Dare Iz A Darkside) and improve on his presentation if he's to win the respect of old fans.
Glad to see ya Red
The first quarter of the album tells me Red has been spending sometime in the south i don't think it was a good idea. The rest of the album is classic Redman, complete with brick city and WKYA radio station.
Fire is Good, put it down brings a "rockwilder" kind of production it seems was made for redman.
Gimmie one seems like a lame attempt to sound commercial which will be skipped before the first hook but if you can get past the rather irritating hook the rhymes are nothing less than Red. Blow Treez blows big time i can't believe that it is the one with meth. If i was shallow that alone would be enough to diss the entire album.
Walk in Gutta sounds like it has been done before on Eric's album but lines like "running my label out of an old winebago" just shows why Redman is one of the best at what he does.
It is glad to have Red back (remember the "Once again in the bricks" guy, he still alive and makes a funny contribution at the end of Wutchoogonnado, like me, many will be keen to find out what happened to soopaman luva)
Don't compare this with Malpractice, Malpractice was the album Red was born to make, this is still a good album. It is a shame there aren't that many skits on this one, but Mr. ice cream man alone is worth half of the purchase price in comedic value. Enjoy
